Installing AROS to Hard Drive...

I've followed Heinz-Raphael Reinke's PDF on how to install AROS to a HD. However, once I get to the Format Hard Drives in the AROS Installer, the program flashes "Erasing Data on Master Disk" and then stops, displays "Partition your drives." Clicking on "Procede" simply repeats the whole situation and nothing happens.

Looking for clues here. :-)

There are good instructions on the AROS home page (or some link to them there).  It involves rebooting after each step because the installer or HDToolBox is buggy.

Tell me about it, I got AROS installed but I still cannot boot from it though, I rechecked it and it still doesn't boot

I followed this document and it worked fine (when I CAREFULLY followed every step)
There are minor differences between the document and the reality of the current version I have on the bootable cd, but I only have half a brain and I figured it out!
Unfortunately, it seems to lock up randomly, so I'm still leary of committing a machine and time into it...

Well, it's still pre-alpha, so, naturally, it's going to lock up, once or twice. :-)

However, I consider this inability to install a critical issue. If the AROS Team wants people to take AROS seriously, they need to fix it. The live CD is nice, but if I'm going to give it a second glance, I need to install it to a hard-drive.

BTW, the link you provided IS the instructions I've been using. I've even tried to do it manually, but tools, like "partition" lock my machine up, so...

First of all, which ISO did you attempt to install?

I used a now unavailable online guide to install to hard disk.  I'm glad I printed it off!  Anyways, this guide says you should ensure Aros goes on a partition smaller than 4GB.

He recommends downloading Ultimate Boot CD and using Ranish Partition Manager to partition your drive rather than HD Toolbox.

You can use HD Toolbox to do everything else, just not the partitioning.

I also couldn't get the installer to work so just manually copied everything over. It took a while but worked fine.

Dunno if this'll help, but worth a try?

There was a bug or two in HDtoolbox that was squashed by Neil.  So for those of you having troubles with the install, try downloading the most recent nightly.

I tried with this tutorial from Ze AROS and it works for me installing an AROS Max distribution iso.

i'm fighting with grub now... it doesn't find the menu.lst and i get a File 15 error.

First, I tried AROS Max, then I tried the latest stable release, dated 2006/02/07, then I tried the latest download.

None work.

Here's the problem. When I launch a shell, and type "info" the hard drive does not show up as a device, like "DH0." And, no matter what I do in the HDToolBox, it never shows up.

This is a 4gig drive, but I've created 0.5 and 1 gig drives, used HDToolBox, and still no go.

I've even tried the link that neuroflip suggested, which got me a little further, however, still nothing when I type "info," when I type "format drive DH0: name System" I get an error, and when I "ask why" it responds "device not mounted."

So, as best I can tell, the system isn't recognizing the drive.

I have managed to get AROS installed and booted using the latest nightly build (20061223). It does need several reboots at specific points, remember to save changes regularly on 'Unit 0'.

Now i can play with it and possibly write some simple programs with it. Any suggestions?

Right now, with the patches, best to use nightly.
