How would you rate BlitzBasic
« on: October 01, 2002, 11:26:48 AM »
Well I'm soon to get a BlitzBasic for my Amiga because I just, SO love to see what I can do with a Basic interepter because I dig into a C/C++ compiler for a system (you would be surprised what some of the crazy people did with QBasic on an IBM with a measly 256 colors)

So I'm wondering, how is it.  Is it anywhere AMOSPro, or is it just junk.

I might not be the best judge of AMOS, never having used it, but based on the AMOS stuff I've seen and used, I'd say Blitz is better overall..  Maybe it's because I still use Blitz  :-D   There's a Blitz2 mailing list still, I'm not on my Amiga so I can't get the address for you, but surely one of the list guys is reading this? :)

Go here and do some reading on AmiBlitz
Blitz Basic 2000

I am currently learning BlitzBasic on my PeeCee. I like having books to reference. I do have AmiBlitz for my A600 . So far it is very good there are some good demos on the PC side at  BlitzCoder

Hope these help.

BlitzBasic was one of the top languanges,
much better than AMos imho ,since it was easier
to make os stuff , it also has much bigger support
from third parties libs etc (note that it is a compiler
noit interpreter) also there is PureBasic started as a succesor of blitz but at the moment it is halted
(author waid it is waiting for OS4 to do some updates)
both Blitz and Pure have the advantage of beeing
porteble between amiga<->windows .(against amos
and c which is much more difficult)

(personaly i prefer purebasic but anyway  ;-) )

I`ve been using Blitz since V2 came out all those years ago, and it`s great to see Bernd Roesch carrying on bugfixing, developing and generally improving it.

As a language, it`s great. You can use any shared libraries you like, (so opening up the Amiga OS to all sorts of fun and games). In fact, I tend to use it as a cross between C and Basic.

You`d be suprised how quick you can knock up small apps with it. As with all languages, you need to spend some time getting used to the syntax and commands, but it`s time well spent.

There`s still an active mailing list going on, so any problems or questions can usually be answered fairly easily.

I wouldn`t count on it being 100% compatible with the PC version of Blitz though, cos the minute you start using OS API calls or shared libraries instead of the built in commands  you`ve lost it.

Anyway, it`s now free so what have you got to loose?
On schedule, and suing
