Title: Adelaide Amiga 30th Anniversary Event (25 May)
Post by: AdelaideAmiga on November 29, 2014, 10:03:31 AM
See Page 4 of Thread for Event #2 Details (http://www.amiga.org/forums/showpost.php?p=788549&postcount=62)

Hi everyone,

I haven't introduced myself yet on this forum so I'll start with a quick introduction.  Basically, I am an Amiga/Old Vintage Computer enthusiast and own a 1000 and 500 system in the Amiga range.  After purchasing my first Amiga I wanted to get involved with other like-minded persons to discuss and exchange ideas about running the systems etc.

I found this forum after conducting a little internet research and realised that there is a community here in Adelaide that participates in such an interest.  I also noticed that there have been previous meetups where the topic of the Amiga has been the main focus.

So, basically, I would like to host an Amiga Event here in Adelaide on the 19th of January 2015.  This is on a Monday night which will coincide with the Adelaide Amiga/Computer user group that is held weekly in the same venue.

So to summarise the details:

When: 19th of January 2015, 7:30pm sharp.

Where:
Clarence Park Community Centre
72-74 East Ave
Black Forest, SA

What will occur:

I am hoping that people will be prepared to bring their Amiga rigs along and set them up in the large conference room.  This will hopefully create some topics of discussion and/or demonstration amongst everyone.  Furthermore, I am hoping (and will confirm this later) that there will be a guest speaker who will give a surprise presentation on a topic relating to the Amiga.

RSVP: If persons could confirm their attendance by either making a post in this topic or sending me a PM then that would be excellent.

Looking forward to meeting other Amiga enthusiasts in what will be one excellent and memorable night!

Regards to everyone,

George

Hi George,

I'm also an Adelaide Amigan. Good job on organizing this.

I'd like to attend but will have to put myself down as a tentative due to work commitments. Hopefully I can be there.

Cheers

Ben

Hey Ben,

Great to hear about your Amiga interest!

Having spoken to some of the other Adelaide guys who are in the Adelaide Amiga/Computer user group, it appears that the most appropriate time to host this is in the new year.

I have edited the original post to take this into effect.

Cheers and look forward to hearing from anyone else.

That date would be better for me, put me down as attending :-) It will also give me time to get my A1200 out of the wardrobe and setup.

How many people are coming along so far?

A colleague of mine who also looks on this board will probably also want to attend, I'll let him know.

eliyahu - Thank you for your assistance :)  Yes - plenty of pictures will certainly be taken for everyone here to see.

Ben - fantastic that you can attend.  At this stage I can confirm that overall we have between 10 to 11 persons attending if we consider AmmoJammo.  Thanks for getting in contact with your colleague as the more we get coming to this event the merrier!

AmmoJammo - It would be great if you came along too :)  I am certain that you will have a fantastic time meeting everyone and having a nice discussion.  Please let me know when you confirm your attendance. :)

Epsilon - Thank you for your confirmation.  Fantastic also that you are attending.

I will keep everyone posted on the nature of this event and will provide an update on numbers.  In my view, it is important that everyone here in Adelaide who has an interest in the Amiga systems keeps in touch with the community whether it be online or in person.  It is always nice discovering others who are enthusiasts and who share the same interests as you!

Best Regards to all,

George

Information Update

I am writing to confirm that after some discussions we decided that it would be preferable to have a Q/A type session with Andrew Wilson who some of you might know as the creator of the Amiga 1000 Phoenix Board.  He is very knowledgeable about all things Amiga and is able to pretty much lecture on a given topic.

Venue

I have attached a photograph of what the venue looks like just so people do not confuse the building with the other community centre next door.

There is car park spacing available around the back of this building and you can enter it on the left hand side.

What was the original date for this? as I thought the changed date was December 19th... e.g. Last night...

Guess I haven't missed it yet! lol

While I'm here, is anyone in Adelaide interested in a Commodore 1802 monitor? ;)
Title: Re: Adelaide Amiga Event! 19/1/15
Post by: AdelaideAmiga on December 26, 2014, 09:57:41 AM
I think the original date was either the 8th or the 15th of December, however it was changed to a more viable date.

AmmoJammo it would be great if you could attend and you may wish to bring that monitor around there.  Someone could express an interest in it on the night.

I don't recall seeing it for at least 6 months! I'm sure its around here somewhere, but so far, nothing has progressed, its still in 10 pieces..

Never seen an A600 in the flesh before.  I reckon they must be fairly rare to find in Australia.

But don't feel at all obligated to bring any hardware along, especially if it is too much trouble for you.

I can't find the memory expansion, and it won't boot into the Workbench install I have without it....

Hi guys,

Just confirming that Simon and I will be attending on Monday. I will also email Ian to check he's still coming.

@AmmoJammo, I might be interested in the monitor depending on the condition. Are you able to bring it along?

I found an old 1084s on the nature strip on Marion road last week. It's in great cosmetic condition but doesn't work unfortunately. It powers up but makes a whistling sound with no picture, apparently could be the flyback transformer.

Any update on the internet access situation at the venue?

I would need ethernet cable access to the internet to be able to use it. I can bring a small 8 port switch along if needed for other people to connect to it also.

Looking forward to it!

@Epsilon - Yes, there is a chance that internet is available.  There is a modem present in an adjacent room with ethernet plugs and wireless connection however there has been some issues with the connection lately.  We did get it working one time by rebooting it.  I am going to organise this to be fixed asap.  Sorry that I did not get back to you sooner as I could only confirm this last night when I was at the centre.

@MelbourneBen - Yes, 7:30 start.  Thanks also for inviting those others.

I can also confirm that there will be another two people attending to our list.  So it looks like it will be a pretty decent turnout!

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to share numbers of persons attending.

At this stage we are expecting around 15 persons, which is a very decent turnout.  Hopefully there are other Adelaide Amigans that will come out of the woodwork to attend !

Cheers and looking forward to seeing everyone next week!

Do to heavy rain fall I have been flown back to Adelaide so I may be able to make this event. But I could fly back to work any day (will only get 24hrs notice if I am lucky.

If I can make it can I turn up with out an RSVP?

Do you require power boards, tables, extension leads etc? I will bring these if I bring any Amiga's.
Title: Re: Adelaide Amiga Event! 19/1/15
Post by: AdelaideAmiga on January 15, 2015, 01:01:40 AM
@cameng

- sure you can attend without an RSVP.

- You are most welcome to bring some extension leads and power boards if you wish.  I will certainly bring some of my own to connect my own system.  There are a few power points around the place so it may be worthwhile.

- Don't worry about bringing any tables.  There is ample bench space in the room to fit enough items.

@Epsilon

- At this stage I can confirm that there is wifi available.  Is this adequate for you?  I have made the request for ethernet and will find out this weekend if this is an option.  However one of the persons has said that they will organise a mobile internet modem as a backup option.

The key part for me is the ethernet connection, as the X1000 needs an ethernet connection to the internet. It doesn't have a Wifi card in it, only an ethernet port. I plan to bring an 8 port switch so others who need it can share the connection also, assuming it is available.

Given the bulk of the X1000, monitors, etc, I didn't plan to bring much else as setting it up will take some time by itself.

The intention is to show newly released and installed AmigaOS4.1 Final Edition on it, RunInUAE with JIT, various apps and games and the Internet functionality (Timberwolf, Odyssey, SMTube, etc), and things that need internet connectivity like AMIStore, etc.

If internet via ethernet cable is not available i think we would miss out on being able to show a lot of stuff on the x1000.

Please let me know if ethernet will be present so I can make the decision which Amigas to bring as I need to pack them up in advance on sunday evening as Monday is a normal work day.

Looking forward to it!

Catcha,
Epsilon

Hi Epsilon,

At this stage I can report that there is a very good chance (85%) that there will be internet in the form of ethernet available.

There are three options that we are working on:

1. Having a mobile modem that has an ethernet port;

2. Connecting to the internet port in the current room (internet is currently not working and will probably be fixed tomorrow);

3. Having a relatively long ethernet cable that can run from your computer/port into another room where a working modem is present.

We believe that there is a long cable present that you can use, however you may wish to bring one along just in case.

Kind regards,
George

ok, thanks for this update. Having the ethernet will make a difference to what I can demonstrate. How long does the "long cable" need to be? 5m, 10m?

Look forward to catching up tomorrow.

I reckon the safest bet would be 15m.  You could probably get away with 10m, but that may mean setting up closer to the door.

20m would be the absolute maximum.

Cheers and looking forward to seeing your system,

George

Thank you everyone for attending and for making the night a success!  Lots of positive feedback was received with great enthusiasm of having another event later in the year.

Also a big thank you for all those systems that were brought in, both the classic and next gen.

Great to see that the Amiga scene is still thriving with plenty of new features, updates and technology still being released!  Would love to get hold of one of the new systems :)

Great blog post and pics Epsilon!  Thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

I do have a few pics that I took myself.  Basically the same as the one's in the blog post so I won't repeat them all here :)

Given the success of our former get-together, another Amiga event is being hosted here in Adelaide on 25 May 2015.   This is on a Monday night which will coincide with the Adelaide  Amiga/Computer user group that is held weekly in the same venue.

Summary:

When: 25 May 2015, 7:30pm start

Where:
Clarence Park Community Centre
72-74 East Ave
Black Forest, SA

[I have attached a photograph of what the venue looks like just so people  do not confuse the building with the other community centre next door.

There is car park spacing available around the back of this building and you can enter it on the left hand side.]

What will occur:

Attendees are encouraged to bring their Amiga rigs (or other relevant systems)  along and set them up in the large conference room.  This will hopefully  create some topics of discussion and/or demonstration amongst everyone.

While there are ample power-points available in the room, you may wish to bring any power-boards or other connectors to make sure that your systems are appropriately connected.

If you require internet access, then please specify if you require an Ethernet or Wifi connection.

We will also provide coffee/tea and other refreshments to the attendees.

Regards to everyone,

George

Sounds great! Count me in :-)

By the way given the close proximity of the date to the 30th Anniversary of Amiga perhaps we can just call it the Adelaide Amiga 30 event?

Certainly make it more attractive to bring more Amiga's along and try to get a complete wall covering the amiga history happening! I can certainly help with some of that :-)

@Epsilon

- Great that you can make it again!

- Yes, sure we could have the title as "Adelaide Amiga 30 Event" - Amazing that the Amiga has been around for so long!

- Yes, that suggestion of having all the Amiga's set up sounds good!  Hopefully we can attract some of the rarer models such as the 500+, 600 and of course the 4000!

@Haranguer

- Great that you are also making it again!

Cheers,

George

The A3000 is buried somewhere in my back room I think. Still haven't  changed the hard drive out yet so it just boots up to a green screen  asking for a password. I will see what I can do:) Is any one on this  forum an Amiga hacker?

To everyone viewing this thread I wish to make the following announcement.

A new website has been launched for the Adelaide Amiga User Group.  The link for this site is as follows:

http://adelaideamiga.blogspot.com.au/

This website features an interactive blog as well as information regarding the current meeting arrangements and main events held throughout the year.

Credit for this site goes to Epsilon, a fellow South Australian and a very active Amiga enthusiast, who conceived the idea of having a site and put it into effect.

Kind regards,

George

Hi all,

Final reminder that the Adelaide Amiga meeting is on tonight, starting from 7:30pm!

I plan to bring my Sam460CR (AmigaOS4.1FE), Powerbook G4 (MorphOS 3.8) to show off a soon to be released Amiga game called Wings Battlefield in LAN gaming mode for people present to try out, and a CDTV on display for the Classic Amiga nostalgics!

I know some others are bringing Classic Amiga equipment too - promising to be a lot of fun!

Event location and details are here:

http://adelaideamiga.blogspot.com.au

Look forward to seeing you there! :-)

Catcha,
Epsilon

Shoot! I have transportation problems. Seems I can catch public transport in but there's no guarantee there will be any services when I leave, whenever that'll be.

Unless something happens, expect me not to show up. Much to my disappointment!

Thank you to everyone who attended.  It was truly a wonderful evening and a great way to interact with everyone.

A new blog post has been made with plenty of photo's from the event:

We are going to hold another one of these events later this year in September.  Date will be finalised soon.

To those who were unable to make it, we look forward to seeing you later this year!

In the meantime, enjoy using your Amigas !

23 People. Well done George! Looks like a nostalgic night. Would have loved to attend but the 8 hour drive from Melbourne is a tad too much.

Can't find the floppy drive cable, or memory expansion for my A600!

I don't recall seeing it for at least 6 months! I'm sure its around here somewhere, but so far, nothing has progressed, its still in 10 pieces..

I found it!
