the killer mercury accelerator!
« on: April 08, 2007, 12:24:30 AM »
I just got a 35MHz PP&S Mercury accelerator from a friend who used it in an A4000.

I have an Amiga 3000 with ROMs 2.04 on board. When I put this accelerator in my 3000, I just got a totally black screen... hoho...problem...

I take the accelerator out and now, my 3000 seems dead! All I got from it now is a series of 3 flashes on the power LED and a black screen.

Wow! Before the operation, the accelerator worked just fine in the 4000 and my 3000 worked fine.

I haven't had the time to recheck the accelerator but now the 3000 seems dead.

Any idea what these 3 flashes means?

Thank you all.

How the heck did you (or your friend) fit a Mercury in an A4000?

Anyway, did you check the clock jumpers?  Did you hook up the fan power?
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

I'm not sure this reply is worth... replying to...

A mercury fits just fine on all Amiga 4000 and 3000, the clock jumpers are the same on the 3000 and the 4000... I didn't change the CPU on the accelerator. The fan plugs in exactly the same way for both machines.

Besides, your reply does not answer my main question... what do the 3 flashes mean?

Did you even take the time to read my first post? The accelerator worked FINE in the 4000.

Seems your jumpers are in an odd position.

WRONG!  :-P

To use it in an A4000 you would have to remove the riser card (at least, possibly more mods would be needed due to the size of the Mercury).  I wouldn't call that fitting "just fine".

Ok, so you have them set, which is all I was asking.  (When you removed the Mercury did you change them back to whatever they were set to?)

Also, what A3000 do you have, 16MHz or the 25MHz?

Never said you did.

Just making sure you did.

Four Blinks    A short exists between two row lines or one of the seven special keys (not implemented)
Goodbye people.

I\'ll pop on from time to time, RL is acting up.

eslapion was not talking about the keyboard...

@eslapion

Have you double checked the clock jumpers?
J100: 1-2
J101: 2-3
J102: 2-3
J103: 3-4
J104: 1-2

Yes, and the 3k won't fire up without the daughter board.

I don't understand why I would have to check these jumpers. I didn't change them before vs after putting in the accelerator. If htese jumpers were improperly set then the 3000 would have had problems prior to putting in the accelerator and it did not.

Also, I have another working A3000 MoBo which I fired up without the daughterboard... I get a nice floppy insertion screen with the colored hook without any problem...

As for the power supply, could just pluggin in the accelerator have destroyed it? WHen I tried it, both the HD and the floppy drive were disconnected.

Yeah sure, you couldn't have done anything wrong, sorry we all have should've known that. I hope your A3000 decides to come back to life soon. Probably it's just {bleep}ing at you. You shouldn't try to do anything since you didn't change anything. Just fire it up everyday for five minutes and pray that it works.

What does THAT have to do with me? The mercury worked just fine in the 4000 and I saw it. What the owner did to that machine for it to work in it is none of my business and I would be ill placed to ask anyways.

Look, I don't understand why I would have to change any speed jumpers anywhere. I never changed any jumpers.

A 25MHz A3000. But then so is the A4000 without his mercury.

Look, all I am saying is, before I put that thing in my 3000, apparently both worked fine. Now, my 3000 is dead and all I've got is a 3 flash code on the power LED. And the A4000 itself that originally had it still works fine without it according to the owner.

I didn't change ANY jumpers on my 4000 OR on the accelerator. I also didn't change the memory configuration on the accelerator itself.

Hummm... there is something I did to my 3000 but then... that doesn't explain why my MoBo here doesn't have that problem...

I removed all fast ram from my A3000 assuming the RAM on the mercury is faster.

The plain MoBo here only has 1MB chip on it and 0 fast RAM too. Still, when I power it up... colored hook and diskette insertion animation... no problem.

Still, the only explanation I see is that the Mercury damaged my 3000. Perhaps, after removing all the fast ram I should've set some jumper somewhere to tell the 3000 it has no more fast ram but I wouldn't know which one that is.

I will have to take a careful look at this again but I would be tempted to think "RAM test failed" is the most likely candidate.

At this point I would assume I had to "tell" the 3000 it no longer has any fast RAM in some way (via jumper setting) and I didn't do it not knowing I had to and not knowing what jumper to do it with.
