AMD Torro vs Intel Geneseo, IBM Power 7
« on: March 28, 2007, 11:42:40 AM »
AMD had announced "open socket" standard with the new Torrenza "Torro" Opteron based motherboard. This enable 3rd party co-processor for opteron boards.

http://www.itwire.com.au/content/view/5705/53/

Intel and IBM had announced similar standard based on modified PCI express called "Geneseo".

http://www.intel.com/pressroom/archive/releases/20060927comp_a.htm

There is a rumor on Inquirer that the new IBM Power 7 CPU will use either Torro or Geneseo.

What happen if AmigaOS 4 is ported to Power CPU, instead of PowerPC? Is it possible to run AmigaOS 4 on future opteron+Power boards?

BTW: Is the original name of Amiga Inc (1985) "Hi-Torro"?

The PC part of the name PowerPC is being dropped and the two product lines are being merged.  I hope that Power-based systems using the new BIOS announced on http://Power.org will run AmigaOS but they may just get MorphOS instead.

Porting Amiga OS4 to Power CPU series is worth nothing, as much as porting OS400 to Amiga 500 :(

Only the server-oriented Power CPUs won't be worth porting AmigaOS to becuase they are specially made with large caches and so on and therefore very expensive.  The newer Power chips will come out with consumer-grade versions but the PowerPC name will not be used for them.
