"does not support Amiga connections (or does it?)"

The internet connection is handled by TCP/IP (a network protocol) in OS4 and is not specified by the AmigaOS. You can probably connect to the net with all of those ISP's (internet service providers)

but the earlybird release AmigaOne motherboards is shipping with Linux, and there are programs programs that connects to the net with a standard modem, and with cablemodems available for free as downloads. :)

Excuse me if I'm being ignorant (as I said, I've never set up an account before) but does that mean all I have do do is put the telephone number we use to dial up t the internet (via Chalkface) somewhere in the Amiga's browesr settings and all will be o.k?

Thanks for your rapid response by the way :-)

Umm, I'm not sure I understand what you mean... the AmigaOne boards that ship now before christmas comes only with LinuxPPC and not with AmigaOS4. If you are planning on running the Amiga emulator under linux then I guess that you have to get internet running on linux first, and there are quite a few programs that you can download from the net in which you can easily set up your internet account by filling in the information you got from your internet provider. And when you got a internet connection with linux, then the emulator uses the linux settings to connect to the internet with for example YAM or Aweb. :)

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear.

I want to connect to the internet using AmigaOS4.0 (I'm only going to play with Linux a little until I get AmigaOS4.0), I guess I'll be waiting a few months.

Anyhow, thanks for the advice.  Now that i know it can be done I should be able to have a play and get things working.

Cheers.

"I  want to connect to the internet using AmigaOS4.0"

ah okey, Now I understand. Yup, and to answer your first question, any of the providers will "work" with OS4. You can surf as long as you got a internet account somewhere. (like the one you use now.)  :-)

You've got some things mixed up I think. The actual internet connection is handled by a program called a TCP/IP-stack. To connect present-day Amiga's you'll need a stack like Miami or Genesis.

The browser (which is a program for viewing webpages), E-Mail client, IRC program (to connect to a so called IRC-network for chatting) all connect to the internet through the stack.

And yes you can use an Amiga with practically *any* internet service provider (ISP). And with Miami and Genesis it is as easy as just entering the phone number, username and password (provided your modem is functioning and connected :-D).

Hope this helps.

BTW. OS4 is said to come with an integrated TCP/IP stack called Roadshow. Browser/email client will also be included I think. I do not know if there will be any other internet programs included. I do hope for a nice surprise =).

Connecting AmigaOS with your existing ISP's info should be a breeze.

Post again when you have it and you'll get more detailed feedback... but if OS4.0 really does make it then there will a load of docs on that sort of stuff on the web, I 'd imagine.

I'd say it surely gets released... what could stop it from coming now?

WOW, you picked up on that one quickly  ;-)

Nothing much meant by the wording really... I suppose I word Amiga stuff like that as the optimism has faded over time... having said that i'm looking forward to a new AmigaOS just the same as anyone else.

Give ntl: a ring or goto ntlworld.com stick your postcode in and you'll see if you can get broadband.

£14.99 a month for 128K cable modem connection which is cheaper than BT openworld 56K dialup.
Use it 24/7 365 days a year. Thats all it costs.
Plus you can get rid of your second line. £11 or whatever bt charge you.

£29.99 for 600K connection.

Use the onboard ethernet in your Amiga One straight into your cable modem. If the OS4 stack is anything like miami three clicks and 1 press of the return key and you'll be setup.

Its so easy to use an amiga with a cable modem.
