Title: Games that you wish had Amiga versions?
Post by: orb85750 on November 22, 2010, 05:49:06 PM
Any classic games that you wish were released for Amiga?

A couple immediately come to mind for me:

Demon Attack
Castles of Dr. Creep

(If this thread has already been done in the past couple of years, then forgive me and feel free to ignore me.)

I wish the original Mechwarrior (the 3d cockpit sim from Dynamix) had been released for the Amiga.  An 020 or 030 would have ably handled it.  I wish Wing Commander II and WC1 Secret Missions had been released.

I wish someone had been able to convince iD that a DOOM port to the Amiga wasn't in vain (which as we've seen since the release of Doom's code, even rudimentary expansions - 030+Fast RAM - can cope with).

F15 Strike Eagle III

A port of Myst - sooner than the one that was eventually released - might have helped.

Okay, here we go - Master of Orion, Master of Magic, Terror from the Deep, Jagged Alliance (Deadly Games), Day of the Tentacle (thanks, NovaCoder), Sam & Max, Oddworld, Realms of Arkania 2, 3, Betrayal at Krondor, Lands of Lore, EOB3, Legend of Kyrandia 2, 3 and many many others. All the mentioned, by the way, would Amiga be easily able to handle...

Return Fire, Sim Farm and some of the others mentioned - especially a modern CD-ROM based Wing Commander & Doom of course. Had the Amiga done a better job of keeping up software wise, *we* (wife at the time really wanted Sim Farm) would have either not jumped ship to a 386 or would have put off a clone purchase until several years later. Hell, I might not have EVER gone to the dark side for a bit had more games been released.

Other titles I would have liked to had seen would be official licensed arcade perfect ports of vintage arcade games. Donkey Kong, DK Jr., Dk III, Omega Race, Centipede, Galaga,Tempest, Zoo Keeper, Ms. Pac-Man, Tutankham, stuff like that. The shareware and homebrews have never been able to really satisfy. The translations of some of the games though we had back in the day *were* excellent: Qix and Bomb Jack come to mind. R-type also I guess. For such a capable gaming system as it was/is, Amiga should have had more console-friendly titles too w/ an enhanced controller right away. Something with at least 2 discrete buttons, but really - Amiga should have had a CD32 like controller right off the bat so developers could have taken advantage of it. Ironic that a next gen computer was (mainly) using Atari 2600 style controllers most its life  :(

And for that matter: games/software on floppy. CD-ROM should have been better integrated and pushed with the Amiga. Excellent platform for it and you can't help but wonder *IF* CD-ROM was more of a standard, the Amiga more than likely *would* have had more clone conversions. Lots of ifs here, I know - but jeez, some of these concepts seem so simple today and we're not just talking hindsight being 20/20 either. Every time I pick up a classic Amiga mag, the same message is resonated: c'mon Commodore, market your machines AND get that blasted CD-ROM technology into more peoples hands.

It would've been fun to see some of the good NES/SNES titles ported to Amiga. Obviously it could've had updated ports of NES classics like Super Mario Bros. 3 and the MegaMan games (the music of which was very MOD-style to begin with,) as well as some of the slightly less well-known titles (I still maintain that River City Ransom is the best brawler ever made, and they already did a Sharp X68000 port, so they were halfway there.) But I can think of a few SNES titles that would've converted pretty well, too. Super Metroid, for instance, has very Amiga-like music, relies more on theme-colored areas than a large global palette, and doesn't rely heavily enough on the SNES scaling/rotation hardware to be problematic, and it's just such a kickass game that it's a shame it never got a home computer port.

OK, I made the last one up, but I can always dream.

The game I got as soon as I got a PC was Microprose Grand Prix 2. The slump in game development was one reason I moved off Amiga as my main platform.

If Amiga had kept up, I would currently use it to play:
Half Life (1 & 2)
Toca Race Driver series
F1 2010
The freely downloadable Doctor Who Adventure games

The music on the CD32 was actually good I thought.  Maybe we'll say they ported SF 1.5.  Seriously all the Amiga version I played were bad in one way or another.  The US Gold one I owned around '92, the playability was pretty decent, but the graphics were just bad.  The later AGA versions had better graphics, but had horrible controls and just plain chunky animations.

This was really the one title I would have loved to have seen done properly on the Amiga back in the day. A totally awesome SFII port "might" have bought the CD32 a little more time.

The 8bit 6502 (the C64 and NES chip) that was in the PC Engine blew the AGA Amiga away as far as a SFII port.  Of course an A1200 should have blown it away. The PC Engine had 8kb of RAM and 64kb of VRAM and it's one of the best ports.  I'm sure there must be some stories as to why the Amiga versions were made so poorly.

Oh, X-Wing.

I seem to recall an issue of AmigaWorld rumored that there was an Amiga version of XWing planned.

And while we're on the topic of Star Wars games, even though it was a rail shooter my past self would have loved Rebel Assault on the Amiga.  I remember seeing a report about it on CNN late one night and thought "Damn, sure hope that one makes it over...!"

'course that was only one year before C= tanked and the writing was on the wall even to a starry-eyed 22 year old like myself.

X-Wing.  I remember an Amiga magazine ran a big headline on the front like "Exclusive! X-Wing on the A1200!" but when I bought the magazine and took it home they had taken a photo of the boxed PC version sitting on top of an A1200.  I was so disappointed.

Fallout 3. If only because the ability to run it would necessitate that we had machines on par with modern PC's at a hardware level and a software market big enough to warrant a port.

That and the fact it was a damn fine game.

First Encounters (Frontier 2, Elite 3).

Waited ages on that, and they kept saying it would come to the Amiga.  I remember Amiga Power got fed up of waiting and just reviewed the PC version.  One of my mates had the PC version and I was so jealous, even a Mac version I could have played on Shapeshifter would have done me :(

Portal in 2d for Amiga 68k

Sideview plattformer with normal gravity.

You control an avatar, not first person view.

Aiming could perhaps be done with a version of  the turricane lasso.

Hold button rotates arm. Release shoots off a bolt. Another click places the portal on the wall.

A jump into one of the portals carries with it the speed and arc when exiting the other portal.

Difficult logic in puzzles to advance and precision jumping. (but not to difficult). :-)

I think 2d Portal could be very fun and addictive.

It would be great if it was made in way so that levels could be added in an easy way so there was no end to the challenge.

There's an ASCII 2D Portal game that's similar to what you have described, despite the graphics it's well made. There's a port for OS4, since it requires ncurses which is available for OS 3.x it might be possible to port it to 68k systems as well:

I absolutely loved Final Fantasy 3 AND ChronoTrigger on SNES. Would have been all over that on the Amiga had they been released.

BTW: what would you all say were some of the Amiga's better Final Fantasy-like RPG's? (ie: easy to get into, characters walking around a 2D map, great fighting scenes and excellent music score)

I know it wasnt addressed to me, but there's very few of that style RPG on the amiga unfortunately. For my tastes Speris Legacy is probably one of the better ones (albiet somewhat generic and massively Zelda inspired). Legends was fairly well received too, although Ive not played it. Apart from that there's also Dragonstone, but that's a little different and somewhat more Western. Theyre the only 3 worth mentioning that I can think of apart from Amiga Zelda, which is only worth the effort for sheer novelty value (it's a homebrew version (and no, I dont mean the SDL based remakes (Of which I ported all 3)).

As for ascii portal, it exists for all Amiga OS flavors I believe. There's definately an AROS version and a 68k version at least and I'd assume it's also available for MOS.

Now as for the original question I'd have loved a decent version of SF2 for myself, but more than anything Id have liked an Amiga version of Command And Conquer. Not that I'm even really a fan, but it was one of the games that put the lid in the coffin for Amiga where I live. Many friends finally gave up on the miggy largely on the back of that.

Thanks Fishy_Fiz and Koshman,

I checked out Amberstar, Speris Legacy, Legends and Dragonstone just now. Amberstar looks more like what I'd be after, but shoot... was kind of expecting some full screen action and better controls    Even still, looks to be a great game.  This is really it for Final Fantasy-like games?  What a disappointment. Dragonstone looks to be a nice Zelda clone though with good graphics though and as a bonus, looks like you can use a 2-button joystick too!

Well, we always have games like Drakkhen, Ultima's & the various AD&D's for a more "hardcore" RPG experience at least.

Well, Final Fantasy/Dragon Warrior-style RPGs didn't really hit it big until the mid-90s, and by that time Commodore was already in its death throes. I presume developers didn't want to put in as much effort as would be required to make a decent SNES-to-Amiga port for their games when they weren't even sure how much longer the platform would be around. Still, I have to wonder why there weren't at least ports of some of the Sega Genesis and Sharp X68000 games, given that they were already 68k-based...

Nah, late 80's, early 90's is more like it - right when Amiga was most popular and dare I say "flourishing". First Final Fantasy came out in '88 - Final Fantasy III was in '91-'92 (they were big right off the bat). And there were dozens of clones in between then. Early to mid 90's, we sure got a lot of great games. Amiga was still pretty BIG then. '96-'97 is when it all started going downhill gaming and support wise. The stuff that was coming out was great, but too few and far between.

Someone else mentioned the X68000 platform as well as the fact Japanese programmers simply weren't paying attention to Amiga and that must have been the real problem as most of the U.K. were too busy with their obsession with floaty, silly, colorful platform games.    :roflmao:

I'll take floaty platform games over JRPGs any day.  Action RPGs like Terranigma, however, would have been a godsend.

They were big in Japan, but it took a while longer for them to catch on in the US; IIRC they didn't really become a big thing stateside until 1993-94 (i.e. the point when SNES RPGs started getting really, really good.)

Still, it probably does have more to do with regional barriers than timing; after all, Western-style RPGs were pretty big during the Amiga period, so you'd think they would have at least brought over a couple of the more popular JRPGs to see if they'd sell (heck, non-MSX home computers are practically the only platform they didn't port Dragon Warrior to.)

Dragon Quest originated on the MSX and was released simultaneously for the NES.  Thats it.

JRPGs were definitely popular before the SNES days.  Nintendo Power pre SNES proves this.

The problem is that the computer RPG scene in the western world was radically different than the console one.

Ultima vs. Dragon Warrior, for example.   Totally different gameplay concepts.

Alot of heavy CRPG players I know dont like the linear qualities of JRPGs.

and you'll notice there are not alot of first person Japanese RPGs, and the ones that do exist (Dungeon Magic!) are kind of strange in comparison to Western ones like Goldbox games and Might and Magic.

Given the time the Amiga was released, they really should have tried getting a few games to test the waters.  Dragon Quest 1, Final Fantasy 1, and Ys would have been good tests to see how things would have went.

also, fishy_fiz, you need to play Wasteland, asap.  Though I recommend it for DOS unless you like dealing with disk swapping.    Never playing that game is like, against the rules of life.

Fallout 3. If only because the ability to run it would necessitate that we had machines on par with modern PC's at a hardware level and a software market big enough to warrant a port.

That and the fact it was a damn fine game.

? I would select Crytek's Crysis instead of Fallout 3. Fallout 3 can easily run on Xbox 360/PS3 or PC with Geforce 8600 GT GDDR3.

Wow, never could find elite or monsterland back in the day, have just used the magic tinterweb and; yes they were available.  My all time time fave - Nemesis (gradius) is not listed anywhere for Amiga though.  The c64 version was very good but bug ridden.  I own the original jamma of this which gets regular use on my supergun - other 2, my bad...

Yep, can see Nemesis but don't have a clue what to do with the file to check it out, I still don't believe it will be the Nemesis I like (known as Gradius worldwide!) as codemasters made a different Nemesis I think and there is also Nemesis Warlock.  Just getting back into the Amiga scene after years of MAME; UK VAC etc.  When I had the A500 in the late 80s my resources were limited by living in the sticks.  I remember getting the train to leeds on a regular basis and trawling game stores looking for 720, Nemesis and Wonderboy Monsterland as these were my fave arcade games at the time.  Never found any of them!!!!  Wish I had known-would have spent many happy years playing away.  Oh well at least I had Xenon 2 and Blood Money too tear my hair out with and chuck countless joysticks at the wall!!!
