What is the status of QuakeII on Amiga?
« on: January 13, 2004, 02:01:13 PM »
Recently I found out that to one of the Polish PC magazines was added the full version of QuakeII.
Because it costed 2 USD I thought that I can purchase myself with not pirate copy of data files.

Unluckilly QuakeI doesn't know what to do with QuakeII data files.

As I've head ID software released the sources to public, so I was expecting PD port for Amiga (combining Amiga graphics procedures taken from QuakeI together with more advanced QuakeII engine math should be implementable). But I couldn't find the sources on ID software website (I couldn't find sources for QuakeI also).

I was so dissapointed to find only one link to Amiga port of QuakeII, which actually led to the site 'file not found on the server'.

I've read that QuakeII was released by Hyperion, however I found only HereticII on their website, with description that it is used on QuakeII engine.

As I own rights to use legal data from QuakeII and that QuakeII sources are released to public - is there any place to find executable, and if not - for what reason?

I guess lempkee knows the answer.
He knows all the answers.  ;-)

Hello haymiggan.

Today I've taken from my mailbox nice package with two 128 MB SIMM sticks. :-)
Bought on Polish auction site.
However I have to test if they work at all...

Cheers

quake 2 on amiga is complete , been for over 14 months now..

port was made by hyperion.

and they have an official quake 2 amiga site for it.

Its an Commercial game so u will have to BUY it from hyperion/shops to use it, its mainly PPC only but an 060(?) version has also been made by hyperion which u can download for free once u regged quake 2 purchase on the hyperion site.

i play it from time to time and we have tried to host a server (AMIGA Q2 server) and works well but sadly we dont have good provider with good speeds, so until then ..well i have to play it on official q2 servers or just play it in 1 player or whatever...

exellent port and the fastest Hyperion game to date (small requirements and huge options lists to remove*/add effects etc to make it faster)

cheers

Without going into GPL-technicals:
PiR allready has all the data-files, so all he would need is the exe-file, which falls under
GPL, since it was devired from GPLed source.

Wether that means he could just use the exe, or has to (find someone to) push the sources
through the compiler, and where he is supposed to get it is a discussion I will glady leave
to the pro and anti-GPL-zealots  :-P  :-P

Bout the 68k-version:
No 68k can handle that, you'll need UAE/Amithon fot that.
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

kronos:about GPL , the gui aint gpl and its not a free game , he can compile his own version from sources though..  oh well this has been discussed to death allready...

anyway about 68k version , when we hosted server we had a guy playing on his a1260 with mediator and v3 , sure it wasnt as fast as ppc but it was PLAYABLE! , his name/nick is alkemyst ... (060/80mhz) , so stop beeing so PRO amithlon all the time :)

anyway i find the ppc version slow at times also , but thats because of my slow ppc (240mhz) and so on, but i get 22-24 fps so i am happy enough for now until a1micro and os4 is out ;)

Oh really? Then how did I play it online against two Amiga users (one PPC, one 060) on my A4000/Cyberstorm MkIII 060/Voodoo 3? The framerate wasn't great, but it was easily fast enough to play fullscreen @ 640x480 and frag people.

"the GUI"

Well that would depend on how much it is intregrated into Q2. If it is needed to
start the game and/or is linked with the exe, than it would also fall under GPL

If it was just a nice "starter" that than will call Q2 with needed paramaters, just as
one could do it in CLI, than it would be o.k. (but also not mandatory for playing
the game). Don't know, can't check, won't care.

About the 68k, seems I stand corrected, but someone I can't imagine it to be
much fun ...

Oh, just rechecked the actual licence, and yes I could hand out as much copies
of the exe as I want, aslong as I also provide (a way to) the sources.

@Kronos

Well, the Voodoo 3 takes a lot of the work off the 060. In fact, Quake II Warp3D 640x480 runs a lot faster than Quake 1 software renderer in a little box on 320x200, and quite a few people completed Quake 1 using 060 + software renderer.

Hey I even completed it on an 1240/40MHz with ZII Graka back then whe it was brand new from ClickBoom. Seeing it from today I can`t see how I could endure this, but this experiance influenced my oppinion about what is fluently quite a lot.
When some PC guy is telling me how slow shoter xyz is on his machine so he hast to update his graka, I just look at the screen and say: It`s running fine, heck I even would dare to increase the resolotuin a little bit more.
Not really interesting, but it`s there.

Hmm... What do you mean by 'I could hand as many copies of exe'?
Could it mean 'to someone who has data without exe?'

I wouldn't mind sources. It would be interesting to have it even. I managed to find original QII sources (link to ID software website - surprize, surprize. Why it is so hard to find? At least for me...)

By the way - say good bye to old PiR, short of memory.
Welcome PiR supreme with his SIMM sockets filled to the maximum. Who could imagine that Helwett Packard is Amiga hardware supplier afterall?  :-D
And I still cannot belive how did I manage to close the box (DESKTOP :-o) with all the screws :-o :-o and without removing floppy drive :-o :-o :-o ... I don't belive it is just by accident. It just had to be designed like so that everything could fit with a little force... :-D My machine is really hot now. And I mean HOT.  8-)

Well first MOS1.4 needs to be released for classic line before he could use it :)
