Title: Simon The Sorcerer ! CD32
Post by: _eCat_ on August 06, 2004, 09:46:16 PM
Hi everyone - guess this question has been asked hundreds of times on hundreds of forums - a search within these formuns didn't bring too much answers though - so i hope this isn't a duplicate post.

When buying my CDRom for the amiga several years ago, i bought the original of Simon CD32, too. - didn't take me too long to find out that it wouldn't wot with the amiga (and the cd32emulation-software the cd-controller had included.). I managed to start the game, but the sound (speech) was all messed up.

With todays UAE the game will wor correctly (as far a i tested) when using cd32 emulation.

does anyone now a way to get the game working correctly with a real amiga ? (or uae)

This is a known bug with Simon CD32 - incompatibility with almost any other Amiga. It might work on a SCSI CD-ROM drive... or with the cd.device wrapper from the Amiga Dev CD. Amiga Format encountered this problem as well when the game was rereleased in the late 1990s.

I think it's possible to install it to hard disk and bypass the problems, but make sure you've got hundreds of megs free for all the speech files!

hehe.. (virtual) HD-space is not an issue - however i think the game needs to be patched somehow to run from a real amiga/uae :(

Simon2, sadly, was a very bad port. :-(
It's a bit better with the final upgrade patch, but still not great. The performance is actually slightly better using ScummVM as a replacement executable and using only the data files from the Amiga version.

Blergh, Simon 2 is crap no matter what version.

I've never had the full Simon but I've got a CD32 coverCD with a demo on it. It used to play fine on my a1200 (remember to install nonvolatile.library, and possibly some others). Don't think I've ever tried it on the a4k.

The final version may be different, though. Some of the posts suggests something regarding the cd.device, so it may be. Back then the demo was used with an IDE drive.

Sincerely,

-Kenneth Straarup.

I think u can get simon cd32 to run with the cd32 emulation on idefix. If I can find my copy I'll give it a try.

I just tried Simon with Idefix and it seemed to work properly. On occasion you didn't get the full dialogue but idefix has lots of options so u can fiddle around with it until it works. I used to play it on CD32 and didn't actually run properly if I had the hard drive plugged in so it must have a few glitches. Give it a try with Idefix and see how it goes.

Update:

Simon2 works pretty well now (native - no scummvm)
Simoon 1 still only crashes (on my real amiga i managed to start that /&$$ thing but the sound was messed up)  however i did not try idefix - since it doesn't seem to be available for free. guess i'll have to continue using the pc-version - or the amiga/text-version.
anyway.. thx!

These is a program called 'AKIKO' (same name as a chip exclusive to CD32 in Amiga range) by AIRSOFT...
http://www.softwarefailure.de/en/index.html is their URL.
It will emulate CD32 pretty good I'm led to believe.

If your copy of simon the sorcerer does not work for you. I may be interested in buying it as I have a real CD32 (or three), but not many good games. Make me an offer, or maybe ask what titles I have (most of these have been played on A4000+CD also) and we could arrange some trade.

Thanks for your reply!
I still hope, that someday it will run properly - perhaps with a whdload-install - so i don't actually want to sale. thanks for the offer anyway.
I'll let you know as soon as i find a solution for the probs :)

i've just searched ebay for more cds - seems to be quite rare - i only found this

eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=50227&item=8128053308&rd=1&ssPageName=WD1V)
hope it helps!

Does the Q-Drive have built in CD32 emulation?

AKIKO is just an old (and illegal; they charged money for WinUAE) hacked version of WinUAE. Todays WinUAE is supposedly better.

One thing still left to mention regarding airsoft. They also offer a Product called 'CD32 Games Install Kit'. Their site claims that this product will install simon 1 cd32 on hd. i was lucky i had that one downloaded quite some time ago - because their download-link is broken for months. That way i was able to test the product which on my UAE-Amiga only managed to crash - in quite some configurations.
guess my last hope is actually whdload - does anyone know if one can request whdload-fixes ?

thanks,
