For Sale: Amiga Walker
« on: July 31, 2011, 07:11:07 PM »
I am auctioning the Amiga Walker right here an Amiga.org:

The Walker is the very last of the Classic Amiga range.
It was to be the successor to the A1200 but never made it beyond prototype stage.
It is exceedingly rare, there are only 2 (or possibly 3) in existence.

The Machine is a prototype made of some plastic, almost card like material so it is very fragile.  It has its own custom motherboard that was clearly still in development.

Does it work?
No. Power appears to be getting to it but it does nothing beyond that.
It used to boot years ago but it was erratic even then.

Can be made to work?
Sorry, don't know.

Will it boot?
No.  The RDB of the disc was overwritten by Windows 98.  It should be easy to fix this but I don't have the means.

What else is included?

Original black painted Keyboard.
Amiga branded black mouse (left button is dead).
Amiga branded CRT Monitor M1438S

--

All bids MUST be via PM on Amiga.org.

Collect from Cambridge UK (I'm about 4 hours from Paris by train).
OR
Shipped via courier in a wooden crate with full insurance.
Shipping will cost a *lot* of money. Packing and shipping could cost in the region of £150 - £350 depending on the destination.
That's *not* including the monitor which could cost as much again, if not more!
This is additional to the price being bidded.
Expect to pay customs fees if outside the EU.
I strongly recommend collection if at all possible.

Payment via Paypal or bank transfer.

If you are interested bid via PM. I'll list the current (anonymous) max bid in the thread.

Starting at £250.

I plan to end the auction at 22:00 UK time on Sunday (7th August).

Note: I reserve the right to ignore silly bids and snipers.

Wow!!!
Earth has a lot of things other folks might want... like the whole planet. And maybe these folks would like a few changes made, like more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and room for their way of life. - William S. Burroughs

Cool. I had no idea that these were ever anything more than mock ups.

First question When does the biding end?

Plus why have you chosen to do it this way and not though ebay or something, its kind of unusually way of doing it, plus you could quite easily keep saying someone has out bided the top bid and whos to know other than your self. Not that I'm accusing you of anything like that, it just be better and clearer on ebay to know where the current bid is.

If whoever buys this ever gets it working, please post pics for us all at a.org
To be honest I wouldn't bid, I would much rather someone with more hardware knowhow got it and made it work.

Don't know yet, I'll probably leave it about a week.

I'm lazy.  It was easier to write a post here.

You're giving me ideas here :-o
But this is a good point, I didn't really think about this.  I'm not going to list names because people might not want to say what they're bid.  But if they want to put it in the thread thats fine.

What I can do is, when I list the highest, I'll list all the bids.  That way the highest bidder can see their bid.   If there are serious questions I can talk to the Mods.

That said, I'm not in dire need of the money so I'm not worried about how much it goes for.

I know this is going to sound harsh and I do not wish to offend anyone but I hope the next buyer would be somebody who actually knows something about the Amiga and can get it working.  With everything that I've read, there is no reason not to be able to get this booted.  There are a number of Amiga experts on this site that could combine their skills to have this running.  When I say experts I do not mean me.  My Amiga expertise went with the early 90s.

I hope whoever buys it this time:

-Gets it working
-Dumps the hardware and software
-Has fun!  :=)

Cheers!

To whoever gets the Walker, I would like to offer my services to assist in reconstruction of the software.

I'm Jason McMullan, one of the AROS m68k developers, and am keenly interested in the ROM and DH0: dumps.

I should be able to help reconstruct the RDB, and generate a bootable image that could be put on a CF device (to replace the aging hard drive).

The ROM dump itself would be especially interesting to Toni Wilen (who is also a key figure in AROS m68k development) as it would allow him to determine what (if anything) needs to be added to WinUAE to emulate the Walker.

I remember your post back in March when you were considering selling the walker:

As already requested who ever wins the auction should really make a backup of the roms and distribute them.

This is an item I wish could go into the hands of people who could do something with it. For example, the Natami team are working on a board that essentially does what the Walker set out to do. Several guys are doing custom cases, I've seen a remake of the C64 case recently. Maybe they could do a walker case..

Maybe I'm biased, but I love the case design of it.. I'd rather have THIS on my desk than a boring looking PC.

Hi mate,

You mentioned in the previous thread you were able to make a backup of the ROM.  Have you made this public yet?

Cheers,
Chris
