Hope it pulls through. :)

Was impressed by even the bootable CD. Hauled even on my 1ghz server machine.

Closest to amiga I have been in awhile.  :-)

Ditto, but from what I see on aros.org it looks very promising.

4Play: Any idea how the PPC ports are doing?  Are they up-to-date with the x86 versions?  If so, maybe I will give PPC-Linux hosted on Efika a try :)
Code 6502 asm or... DIE!!

The PPC port runs hosted on Pegasos at least! as for the Efika  Genesi has donated a litle cash to have it ported as you can see here http://thenostromo.com/teamaros2/index.php?number=46 anyone is free to take the bounty :)! you should check out the gallery on aros-exec.org to see some more up 2 date screenshots or even pop by irc.freenode.net #aros for a tech talk.

AROS suffers from what every flavor of amiga and amiga-like OS's suffer from: a lack of decent apps.  No office suite + no web browser* = no audience.

*Amiga web-browsers are severly lacking.
Back away from the EU-SSR!

AROS is, at the moment, my only way to get a new Amigalike operating system, so I'll echo the "last hope/only hope" sentiment. (Although MorphOS seems to have new hope for the future.)

I've tried it on x86 Native, x86-Linux and PPC-Linux. Both the Linux hosted versions are exactly the same. The x86 native version is the same but suffers from a lack of drivers, especially for network cards, so you have to be selective in what you try to install it on if you want everything to work.

I'm currently finding parts to build a dedicated, compatible PC for AROS, so I'll be reporting on how that goes when everything's working.

It's correct also to note that AROS suffers from a lack of apps, but development of the OS seems to be really rocketing forward lately so hopfully there'll be at least a working browser soon. (Or built in 68k emulation.)

Re: browsers doesn't MOS have that KHTML based Sputnik thingy? From all the hype it sounded like that's supposed to be a proper modern browser.

Though I'm dubious of all the support Sputnik is getting among the AROS community; from reading their boards at aros-exec.org it sounds like there's a lot of support for paying the dev to port it even though he'd keep the code locked up tight. This is something I really don't like the idea of, especially on an open source OS like AROS; they should put the money the Sputnik guy would charge into the KHTML bounty and get it done under the APL.

AROS is the last, best hope for Amiga (had to slip in a B5 ref) but the devs don't seem to realise that: they refuse to give any sort of 'roadmap' or any indication of how far along they are to what they consider a useable first release that whole 'no schedule and rocking' thing sounds nice, but it basically means they don't want to promise anything in case they can't deliver it on time (given how late most things in the Amiga world are I don't think they have much to worry about). I read a thread over at aros-exec the other day (called 'roadmap... again') where one dev suggested they 'slap a 1.0 on it and get back to work' or words to that effect - they don't really seem to want AROS to ever be finished - it's like a toy to them; even the name suggests this - Amiga Research Operating System.

Obviously some devs there have a different attitude and are doing great work - things like DOS packets, the drag'n'drop thing being fixed, not to mention Dr. Schulz taking on the USB stack AND the x64 port together while doing his phd (these are just the 'high profile' things I can remember right now) and this activity gives me some hope for AROS - they might yet be able to slap a 1.0 on it that actually means something and isn't just a way to distract the detractors.

Marco,

The browser thoughts have been changed. There was a post on the AROS Show lately, as well as Rob's blog. This changed some things. So the bounty looks like it will be re-written.
There was also a discussion about it on AROS-exec.org.

It's kind of a long story, but we are doing what we can to keep it as open as possible.

Ok, well after playing around with my "real" Amigas for a while now I'm giving AROS a try.  I've donated some cash and even signed up for the monthly donation.  I'm building an x86 machine right now to install it on and I've downloaded everything I need, I think.   :)

I've got a P4 1.7GHz machine with 768MB RAM, 20GB HD, Nvidia GeForce TNT video card, and on-board sound & NIC.  Will this system be good?
