Title: Kiki speaks of her Video Toaster/Amiga heritage
Post by: RobertB on February 14, 2010, 06:45:24 AM
On Friday at the Macworld Expo 2010 in San Francisco, the Star Trek rock band, Warp 11, played four numbers for the live, on-stage Leo Laporte show.  In introducing the band, Leo spoke about the Amiga and the Video Toaster and had a brief talk with band member, Kiki Stockhammer, before the band started playing.  Kiki then talked a bit about her history with the Video Toaster.

To see the Kiki and Leo talk about the Amiga and the Video Toaster (and to see the band play their musical numbers), go to

In the next few days, the video will be edited
into segments and be put up on Youtube,

She said that she lost all of her 'Toaster' money when she left NewTek with Tim and Paul.  Then -I think- that company started to have problems (Play, Inc.?) and then Paul Montgomery died and Tim left.

I know this is going to sound harsh but she reminds me of the popular-hot-cheerleader in high school that -after graduation- isn't quite sure what to do since you can't get a job being a popular-hot-cheerleader.

Wonder what happened to Laura Longfellow?  Now she was the real Amiga Party Queen!  ;-)

Newtek still calls on her at times for various industry functions, and her day job is still in the industry.

Kiki and the Amiga:

"NewTek should have dropped the Amiga like old luggage years ago." - Kiki Stockhammer (1995 Fall COMDEX)

After leaving Newtek, Kiki had a brief fling with failed company Play Inc, which led to this second quote:

"Well, all the brains at Newtek just felt that it was a complete waste of time to stay with such a dead platform like the Amiga. That is why we left the company and started Play Inc." - Kiki Stockhammer (1995 Fall COMDEX)

2.How did you end up in Warp 11?

Well, after I lost all of my money on Play Inc., I thought, "Hey, I'm a diva to geeks and losers already, why not beat that horse some more."

AND MY FAVORITE:

4.How'd you first get involved with Newtek back in the day?
I used to hang around a lot of college dorms and frat houses. When some of the guys finished school, they remembered me. I was called Kiki "Cock"Hammer back then.

The concept of Warp 11 is hilarious. I want to like their music, but I just can't get into it.

While it might not be popular, Kiki was saying what most developers were saying at the time.

I was working with Digital Creations finishing Brilliance when Kiki and Paul came to negotiate the contract that led to Play.  As Digital explained to me, given the size of the pc market, even a failure could make lots of money.  Play's first consumer product was the Snappy digitizer which largely came from the work on DCTV.  It sold up the wazoo and funded the other Play projects which were expensive "Toaster" related hardware and software for the PC.

I lost touch when Digital became Play, but from an outside observer, it looked like they were spending cash rapidly.  I'm not aware of anyone from inside Play saying much about what really happened at the end.  I've been given the sense it was very unpleasant.

A lot of people thought that at the time.

Of course as NewTek is still around and she's back working for them, sounds like she's moved on...

I mean, I don't think any less of Matt Frewer or Max Headroom knowing now that Matt is about the least technical person around.

(Seriously edited in light of the post below that points out that the other quotes were fabricated.)

..for those who skipped the pre-"interview" text...

Quote
Alas, we submitted the questions which follow but never received a response.

...

bottom line: no response was forthcoming.

So what were we to do?

With the greater public interest in mind, we decided to answer the questions for her. What follows are what her answers very well might have been had she taken the time to actually respond to our questions.

Though that doesn't account for the "drop Amiga" sentiment stated earlier.

NewTek is just a good company. The Jim Plant and Tim Jennison are genuinely cool folks that care about their employees. With that sort of leadership folks will come back and work with NewTek. The company has been through peaks and Valleys but I never heard any NewTek folks complain, if anything they're postive and proactive.

The video there has been replaced by one with less compression (but a bigger file size); in other words, now it looks better.
