@Brian

Philips web sites are useless, I could never find info on my old DVD player. The drive is listed here though:

Hmm... the drive came as ready for +&- formats (had an extra sticker on the box so guess it has already been flashed). So the new flash that cost 7.5€ will give me what exactly? Nothing as far as I can see so I'll wait 'till a new flash say it'll make the drive burn dual layer or something other fancey. ;-)

Seem I have the Philips DVDRW824K/40 with Firmware 3.3 which is the latest so I'm fine for now... sadly read that the drive CAN'T be flashed into taking duallayer DVD's... :bigcry:
(:idea: Still hoping that's a marketing scam and when the upcomming DVDRW885 firmware comes it'll will work on my drive aswell and activate it's hidden duallayer capabilities.)

@ Brian

Check this thread:

The BenQ 800a apparently is a clone of your drive. Firmware for that may work on your Philips.

I've had a single-layer MSI DVD burner for a good few months now.  The DVD's I've used are TDK (expensive but good) and Infiniti (cheap and good).  Only had one dud DVD, but that was me screwing around trying different things.

I've tried both +R and -R and had absolutely no probs with either.  They all played on my PC, PS2 and a mate's DVD player perfectly too :-)
