Super computer power in a desktop PC?

"Researchers at the University of Antwerp in Belgium have created a new supercomputer with standard gaming hardware. The system uses four NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GX2 graphics cards, it costs less than 4000EUR to build and thanks to NVIDIA's CUDA technology it delivers roughly the same performance as a supercomputer cluster consisting of hundreds of PCs!"

The bit about it all that really worries me is the fact that a UNIVERSITY has to have a computer firm to build it for them!

I mean, if they can code the software to work on the system, you’d of thought the hardware building side would of been a doodle, especially since they actually chose each piece of hardware themselves.

Sigh. And I’m going to University at some point

Besides, if it’s a computer for actually number-crunching, rather than playing games, since they've got cooling issues couldn't they swap out all those illuminated fans for some high power mains blowers? I'd of also thought that it might of helped to *block up* those grills at the back, that way they could get positive air pressure through the GFX cards.
Heh, they could even bolt a big centrifugal blower to the top of the case.

Just my daily moan... :-D

:-D

Actually, for the experiences that I've had most people wouldn't appreciate what's special about such a system, and as a result i've got a feeling it might have the opposite effect...

(PS...This is part of Bloodlines’ quest from another thread...)
