OS 3.9 and Indivision ECS
« on: December 14, 2013, 09:24:11 PM »
I have been told that OS 3.9 really needs a graphic card to run at it's best. How well does does 3.9 run with an Indivision ECS? The reason I ask is my A2000 still has WB 2.1, I would like to upgrade it at least 3.1 but just wondered about 3.9

OS 3.9 needs a 68020, a lot of RAM, a screen mode with 1:1 aspect and a lot of colors.

With OCS chipset 16 colors is the maximum and the absolute minimum for OS 3.9 to look ok.

640x512x16 needs 160 kb of chip RAM. Another 160 KB for the background image. And a bit more for the icons.

If you can afford all this, then it's ok. You'll probably not be able to run any game with this setup.

I have an 030 and 68882 co processor, so that is covered. Will OS 3.9 work well with the Indivision ECS?  Is it best to keep WB in 16 colors while using the Indivision?

I believe it is 6.2 but I will to look and see. Now that I think about it I think the sticker that gave the exact rev came off but the MB says rev 6.

I run OS 3.9 + BB1-4, Visual Prefs, Peter K.'s icon library, and the Rebel palette on my A2000 using Indivision ECS and a LCD monitor.  I typically run either 800x600x16 color SuperPlus, or a custom 700x482x16 color screen mode (is a little faster than SuperPlus).  Attached are a couple screenshots of my system that I took a few days ago.  While I'm still in the market for a graphics card it's a low priority, given the cost.  Honestly I've shown this system to people and they're shocked that it's only 16 colors.  ;)

So, yes, 3.9 will absolutely run for you on the Indivision ECS.  :drink:

Hey Mike, this is awesome! I gotta do this to my A2000. I just need a 3.1 ROM. I just placed a ROM in my cart at AmigaKit (other things in there too just have to get all at once to save on crazy shipping prices - I hate when they run out of hard to find items while I'm waiting to fill my cart with goodies). I have a couple of spare 10GB/10K RPM SCSI drives I could experiment on. I think it's time to get a USB card too! I also have a spare Toaster4000 card that might work with OS3.9 in an A2000? How does you AD516 work out with OS3.9? I've never tried to get mine to actually work yet. :o So anyways... more Q's to come on this great project of yours!
A500: 2MB Chip, 8MB Fast, IndiECS, MiniMegi, IDE4ZorroII on Z-500, KS1.3/KS3.1, WB3.1&BWB

A1200: 2MB Chip, 64MB Fast, 4GBCF, GVP Typhoon 030 @40MHz w/FPU, Subway USB, EasyNet Ethernet, Indi AGA MKI, FastATA MK-IV, Internal Slim CD/DVD-RW, WB3.5

Thanks, Gizmo!  The AD516 is still "on the list", I haven't had a chance to reload the software or try out the AHI driver for it yet.  Hopefully soon!  And the USB Thylacine, I'm not too pleased with.  It's slow and laggy when it doesn't lock up the system entirely.  I've got on my list to try it with the original Thylacine software (instead of Prometheus), and am also considering SpeedFreak's 14MHz Buster hack, since it seems like people using this card in A3000/4000 ZIII don't have any of these issues.  Or I may ditch it for an alternate solution, still deciding.

Looking at your sig our systems are pretty similar, I smell a competition for the best A2000, haha!  :D

My Kingdom for a 3.1 ROM!
Anyone have a spare here in the Union?

Now back to Star Trek TOS, The Galileo Seven, on Enhanced DVD! Geeze, I never get tired of watching Phyllis Douglas (rip) leap frogging out of her seat on to the floor of the Shuttlecraft!

Thanks for the for the feed back and explanations. That really helps a lot! I look forward setting mine up in a similar way and trying out these screen modes.

Ironically that is the only episode have yet. I downloaded it from iTunes two or three years back thinking it would have the new digital CG effects. Alas it did not! It was not clear at the time wich were the updated TOS episodes. Still fun to watch though. It funny to see how they carefully made sure you could not see panties under that mini skirt after they had crash landed on the planet. She is sitting on the floor with her legs open but the had McCoy(Kelly) is standing in front her. A sweet looking woman.

I have OS3.9 with BB4+ on a rev 6.2 board and an Indy ECS running fine, but both 3.9 and USB require at least a 68020 and some fast RAM.  My setup has a newly acquired A2630, 1 GB HDD and CDROM off an A2091.  3.1 ROMs are available.

Nice set up! I have a Derringer 030 but it plugs into the 68000 socket lays parallel to the motherboard. I have been discussing this issue in another thread as far as there being enough room for the Indivision ECS since the derringer partially covers over the Denise chip. It looks like it may work. However I only have 1mb chip ram and would like to get a Minimeg or DKB Megachip but it really have to be seen if that will squeeze under the Derringer.
