That's odd... But the Hard drive shouldn't be casuing that (you could always unplug it and find out ;-) ).

If you can read the Debugging text then that means that the VESA.hidd is not working... have you put a new gfx card in it?

Nope, same card (ATI Rage) that I've used in this machine and an identical one (I'll try booting on that one, but as a last resort 'cause it's my webserver).

Well, I get the debug info if I choose VGA or VMWare. If I choose a VESA mode the screen appears to change resolution (you know how sometimes you can just tell, even though it's a black screen, that something's happening?) but I get a blank screen.

I figure it's having the same problems behind the scenes judging by the matching disk activity patterns (floppy light stuck on, HD flickers twice every 3 or 4 seconds.)

Perhaps I'll rip the HD out then ;-)

When did this start happening? The hard dive and file system have been improved a bit in the last few months...

On friday, I tried the latest build and found that it worked fine on my Athlon and my P4... I even tried the HD install and that worked perfectly... (For the first time I might add :-D )

At this stage of the Game I would suggest you use VMWare insted of CD-R :-)

I will put that on line int he next few mins (or as soon as possible... since my Server seems to be crawling at the moment).

Gah... Uploads to my server are at 2Kps

Try this build:

AROS 14th November 2003

The build on my site has been updated even if the text hasn't :-D

Got it installed :-) (Well nearly... I gather there's supposed to be a bootloader, but I'm still booting from CD. HD boots from a soft reset okay though. Not sure where I went wrong but I'll try again.)

When I wiped the drive of all its partitions and MBR, all the builds worked again (minus the dead one)... I've got some info on the partitions saved here, if it's of any use to help figure out how it came about? :-)

If you used the CD0:Tools/InstallAROS program, then it should install the bootloader and do everything foryou :-D

Just woken up Chris? ;-)

Well it shouldn't. the DOS partitino shoudl be dead. Open HD toolbox and destroy the partition totally. then build a nice RDB partition on the drive and try and instal again.

you WILL have AROS booting off a hard drive :-D

Maybe I should learn some more about this stuff before I continue further ;-)

Matt!!! You got the bootloader working finally??!?? Don't tease, 'cos I LOVE what you guy's are doing.

  :-o  :-o  :-o

Yup, I was just tinkering around and I set up an RDB drive, I was about to go through a manual install... then I thought; "hell, why not just use the Auto Installer". So I ran the program "InstallAROS" and that's what it did :-D

Took about an hour of it not looking like it was doing much  to do it, but do it, it did

Now I turn on the machine and it boots into Grub, you can see a GRUB screen Flash up that allows you to select which OS to boot, but that goes away really quickly, AROS then ask what screen mode you want and you're in...

I have fully customised the Prefs and start up sequence to get my machine booting like my Old A1200 :-)

So it seems that SBM is causing the problems right?

Yeah, although I still don't understand why. I have the BIOS set to boot from CD-ROM as the first priority, it shouldn't (and as far as I can tell, doesn't) even look at the drive's MBR.

All I can think is that once AROS has loaded into the RAM, it starts to look for a bootable drive (ie the boot CD, an FFS floppy or a FFS hard drive)... SBM must cause the drive to look like an FFS one ,and then AROS tries to boot from it, Thus the "CPU Deadend" you get when it can't find anything meaningfull on it!!
