Due to a dissagreement between Softvoice and Commodore, "Say" was dropped from Version 2.0 (and all later versions of AmigaOS).

If you want to use the speech system, you have to copy over the libraries from your 1.3 disks.

Hi,

Early versions of 2.0x still came with "translator.library" and the "Say" command, etc. This was improved upon from the older Workbench 1.x versions.

And there's this alternative, which can even speak in Klingon!  :-)

Like InTheSand points out, 2.0x had it. It was removed from WB 2.1, and never returned.

I dont know what you mean by that, But SAY was updated for the A600 on WB 2.04 ................the speech sounds much different and so do the voices..........it can also speak more properly.

By golly you're right!

I thought 1.3 was the final version because I didn't see "Say" on 2.1, but I just looked at 2.04 and "Say" is there. The 2.04 "Say" is 6220 bytes vs. 7012 bytes for the 1.3. There is no version string on the 1.3 "Say", but the 2.04 is version 37.4. Strangely, there is no translator.library on the 2.04 or 2.00 Workbench disks! (at least on the Amiga Forever ADFs)

I had to test using my old 1.3 translator.library and when using this, both versions of "Say" sound exactly the same. So if you say the 2.04 version sounds better, then it must be because of a newer translator.library. So what version is your translator.library? (and where did you get it?)

3246251196: check to see if you have translator.library in the Libs folder. If not, then that's your problem.

@mr_a500

Actually the better sound quality comes (mostly) from the newer narrator.device, not translator.library.

IIRC also the newer translator.library was required for the best sound quality (it'd add the new control codes supported by the new narrator.device).

Missing files on Amiga Forever ADFs are probably explained by Cloanto's policy regarding disputed components. Not sure if this is it, but this would explain it at least.

Wasn't there something about SAY being taken off some version of the OS at one point? Seems to me that my A4000 w/3.0 didn't have the narrator device so say could not work. I had a program called "Softalk" that did some improvements to the speech process. My daughter started on the Amiga using Talking Animator and thought the speech ability was fantastic! What a fun thing. The book Inside the Amiga has a lot of stuff on the speech ability of the Amiga. I like the part about being able to use the sound of the words to animate a mouth correctly. Wow.

I'd like to try those newer versions of translator.library and narrator.device if somebody has them. Mine are version 33.2 from 1986 (both files).

Edit: Never mind - I just got them. Yes, it does sound different. Some words are better, some worse. I've got a program that does lots of talking - "3D Crystal Lattices" - and I can't decide if it sounds better or worse.

The Workbench 2.05 disk has the same versions as 2.04, but no "Say" program (the start of "removal" from WB). Well, now I know that the final versions are 37.7 for narrator.device and 37.1 for translator.library.

Hi,

It's definitely worth checking out the v42 replacement translator.library (Aminet, see link in my post above), especially for non-English-speaking users, Klingons (!) and anyone not wanting American English pronounciation. I'm not sure about the quality of this vs the last official C= version as I've never done a direct comparison.

Now I know this is nitpicking but Say was removed starting from WB 37.72 (A600), I know because that was the version that originally came with my A600. :-)

The more precise, the better ;)

Hmm I guess 2.1 added CrossDOS then, or what was the thing... ?-)

Yeah, I think 2.1 added crossdos.  I had 2.0X on my 2000, and remember being terribly frustrated at not being able to read msdos disks.

Say was cool.  I made some great prank phone calls with that one.  I've been meaning to install it on my 1200, but some things just never get done.
Good good study, day day up!

2.1 also added localization.
