Which printer should I buy for my Amiga?
« on: March 11, 2007, 08:57:18 PM »
Hey guys, i'm looking to buy a printer. I just need to print text from iBrowse or Finalwriter. I don't need to print color. Any suggestions? I'd like it to be new, i've had my fair share of used printers that breakdown realllly fast.

I've been looking at the Brother laser printers, but i'm not sure if they are any good with the Amiga. They claim PCL emulation but i've been reading it might not be so good. A cheap inkjet would probably be OK but not sure what brand to choose.

Thanks!

Follow this link to see the printers that Turboprint 7.60 supports: Turboprint drivers

Maybe a laser printer would be fastest for you. The page just glides out with a light hum as opposed to the jittering cat fight that is the injket process.

IBrowse can only print plain text or Postscript, so you'll need a Postscript printer or TurboPrint (it includes an interpreter, right?)

I've used the HP Laserjet 4 with a Postscript add-on module with some success under IBrowse.

If you don't want colour output, go for an HP Laser. Samsung sells a couple of good, inexpensive laser printers, but I am not 100% sure that they have HP emulation (You'll need that little feature)
I still use an HP 4M between my Amigas and a C-128! Great printer!
A2000 GVP 40MHz \'030, 21Mb RAM SD/FF, 2 floppies, internal CD-ROM drive, micromys v3 w/laser mouse
A1000 Microbotics Starboard II w/2Mb 1080, & external floppy (AIRdrive)
C-128 w/1571, 1750, & Final Cartridge III+

I found a working HP LaserJet 5L. What driver do you guys use for your LaserJet 5 series? This printer looks like a winner! :)

I got myself an HP-1018 Laser printer. The only drawback is that you have to own a Win-PC in order to use its drivers.

I've managed to print from the AMiGA through the PC with great results.

The good old Canon BJC-4xxx series / S-2xx are very good.
I use a BJC-4200 since many years and it works very well.
WB-Drivers are available directly at Canon and Aminet.
New ink is absolutly cheap ... 1,29 Euro (black) 1,69 Euro (color).
Compared to other ink prices here in germany it is very very very .. cheap.
(HP or Epson ink are often arround 30-50 Euro)

OK, it is not fast as hell ... but, hey .. we are talking about retro-computing!
(The computer must be able to feed the printer with input)
 :-P
- rockstable
- cheap even new ink is very cheap!
- color
- free drivers directly from the manufacture

(and no hp/epson-like built-in features to "emulate" errors after 10.000 pages)
