A good desktop replacement for Windows or Linux, looks like Amiga Workbench and acts like it too. (Rocklyte's AtheneOS) :-D

It looks like a horrible cross between Windows and Linux imho

*cringe* indeed.

Don't usually post replies to old topics, but thought it would be better than starting a brand new one in this case.

Just found out about Athene OS. Main link to Amiga is the Omega Workbench, which has already been mentioned. Screenshot here:

However, the most impressive feature in my opinion is boot time. 5-10 seconds!!! Amazing (for PCs anyway). More specs here:

It might have been neat if it was a Windows replacement but also still ran Windows things on your Windows box. Looks though, like it's just another proprietary operating system. Did I not read far enough?

Weirdami, as far as I can tell you can use it both as a standalone OS (partly open source) and as a GUI within Windows or Linux. However, I'm not 100% sure how well you could run Windows programs within it (maybe within WINE?).

Sounds like you'd prefer a Amiga skin for Windows or ReactOS. Check out Windows Blinds:

OS4 skin for Windows:
http://www.wincustomize.com/skins.aspx?skinid=5200&libid=1
Other Amiga skins:
http://www.wincustomize.com/skins.aspx?libid=1&search=amiga

Of course this is purely a cosmetic change. Any other options I've missed?

Hey its got to be better than VISTA!! It doesn't look too bad to me. I checked out the screen shots. I have been test driving some Linux Dist's and really like what I have used so far. I tried the Arklinux and Xandros and I have an older version of Redhat I am going to check out next.
