Title: Epsilon's Amiga X1000 Blog
Post by: Epsilon_ on March 05, 2015, 12:53:43 AM
Hi All,

For those who are not aware, since 2012 I actively maintain a blog dedicated to Classic Amiga and NextGen Amiga systems (all flavours).

I try to cover projects and look at new releases of interest, as well as hints and tips on how to get things working on various Classic Amiga and NextGen Amiga systems. The link is here:

http://amigax1000.blogspot.com.au

In the last month I have been focused on Classic Amiga project work, with my recently bought Amiga 1000! Here are some direct links to recent posts about the Amiga 1000:

http://amigax1000.blogspot.com.au/2015/02/my-amiga-1000-has-arrived.html

http://amigax1000.blogspot.com.au/2015/02/gotek-floppy-drive-emulator-on-amiga.html

I also took a look at some AmigaOS 4.1 software released on my AmigaOne X1000 in the last month or so, and a two part coverage of the installation process for AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition on the X1000 - some of the direct links:

I will update this thread when I have new blog posts so people can keep up to date.

I hope you enjoy it! :-)

Thanks for the blog and testing a Gotek on an A1000.
I have to get one now. :)
I may but not for sure, will get a board that will make the external drive df0.
I hope that some one will make memory upgrade available again. I may get and external device.

Great Blog! Great in-depth information.

As to the Gotek, my choice would be an external case with df0/df1 switching.

Thanks,

M

The kickstart disk uses a fast loading ROM routine to get it in, so I'm guessing an ADF file may not work.  There is a program on Aminet -- DosKwik (ReadKwik/RiteKwik) that uses that routine, but not for loading KS.

One way to find out.

Although you meant it as a joke, Windows 8 is actually ok. It's far less annoying than dealing with MacOS and Linux.

I use windows 8,  speed wise an improvement on windows 7.  Once you get used to it its not too bad.  Hoping the free windows 10 will be the one.

I do not mind MacOSx again  once you get used to it it has some niffty features.

Linux just cant be arsed with.  Tried several times and its just still more fuss than I have time for.

It isn't close. Going back to Windows 7 Ultimate from Windows 8.1 recently was really painful. I don't use tablets or "metro" apps but desktop mode in Windows 8.1 is just better than Windows 7. You just have to get passed the negative press so you can actually use it and see the truth.

People hated 95 then loved it, people hated XP then loved it. Watching people getting manipulated is fun.

After using 8 and 8.1 since release date I find it hard going back to Windows 7. 8.1 is very snappy, and well thought out.

Hybrid boot is amazing tech, halves your boot time. Hate waiting for Windows 7 to sort itself out these days.

There is a lot of negative hype out there about it but most of this is from ignorant or anti MS people. MS have been making some great products of late.

Windows 10 is also a good OS too, I have that setup on another desktop here and each update that is pushed it just gets better. A shame they had to bend over and use a hybrid start menu though as that feels like a step back.

The release should have been Windows 10 then 8 maybe the change would be more subtle.

Windows 8 gets better as more software is developed for it. Unless you use a lot of older software it is pretty good.
As soon as Windows 10 is released the cycle will start again. There will be a lot of software that no longer works. Incompatible hardware etc. Until several years later it works stable.

Lets face it. The only reason I have Win7 is for some modern games and some other apps. Many games are not supported on Win8+, so I'm fine right here.

Hi All,

I have updated my blog this weekend covering the build  and setup of my new Sam 460CR system, which I bought while waiting for  my X1000 to be fixed (which is with Varisys at the moment).

I  also setup my A4000D while waiting for it to arrive - the X1000 sure  leaves a big hole since it stopped working, and I miss not having it to  use. The Sam 460 goes someway to helping with that while I am waiting for the X1000 to be fixed.

Thanks for the preview/review.  I wonder how viable dual video card support is.  There's a lot of X1000 owners with more than video card now and a many people now have more than one monitor around so it would be nice to have your own monitor in 2 player mode even if you only have one system.

And I never have had a boot time issue with Windows.

Interesting reading. And interesting that you are getting French in Ambient status bar. Your language settings is set to just English, is that right?

In GfxSpeed you can save results to a benchmark module you can share with others and you can load other benchmark results to GfxSpeed.

@itix

Sorry I couldn't respond on Morph.zone regarding some helpful pointers from you and others, but the site appears down at the moment.

Not sure regarding the french in the status bar in Ambient on the powerbook either - it was like that a few MorphOS versions ago when installing the Chrysalis pack on a new install. I only use English, and checked the settings to confirm it is English, and only English in the Locale settings. No idea where the french is coming from!

I am keen to get the Envy24HT working on the Sam 460CR ...not sure if the elf openpci library is needed or not. also, the library. has .elf at the end, does that need to be renamed openpci.library to put into dh0:morphos/libs - nothing else has .elf so I assume so...

I guess if MorphOS can't find the card on boot then it doesn't appear in the MorphOS sound options to choose from...well it hasn't appeared for me yet anyway! Any other suggestions to get it working? I am all ears! :-)

No need to remove .elf at the end. It is old legacy thing. In early years of MorphOS development it was used to distinguish PPC native libraries from 68k libraries when located in same directory.

The problem could be OpenPCI. It is very old and not updated in ten years. Maybe it doesnt work with SAM...

You could try PCIScan (shell command) to check if it is seen by MorphOS. If it is then it is probably problem in openpci.library...

I had the same problem with French. The reason is that the window is set manually. I'm not in front of my computer right now so I don't know exactly where, but it's one of the text based bars in a window setting.

Looks like openPCI cant see behind the ASM1083/1085 PCIe to PCI bridge on the Envy24HT  sound Card. There was the same problem under AmigaOS 4.1 .

Thanks - I ran the pciscan command as suggested. It looks like it only sees a pci-e to pci bridge - doesn't appear to see the pci-e audio card itself...

Not sure what else I can do to get the sound working.

I notice differences in the partition layout between AmigaOS 4.1 and MorphOS .
AmigaOS low cyl starts at 43 . Morphos at 4.

there are some oddities. for example i have problems with partitions created under MOS in AOS4, but the reverse isn't true. so i always create SFS0 partitions to share between the two systems under AOS4 on my peg2. i have no idea why this is the case.

Very good tip and thanks for this - I confirm it works this way too. Prepping partitions under AmigaOS4 first is definitely the way to go.

Thanks for this post Epsilon - enjoyed listening to your discussions of the CD-TV and of course the next-gen systems.

It seemed that your collection of systems attracted quite an interest on the night :D

Hi All,

Today I have an exclusive sneak preview on my blog of the upcoming MultiviewerNG program for AmigaOS4.1 by Andy "Broadblues" Broad for A-EON Technology. It will be released soon on AMIStore.

I tried it out on my Sam 460CR running AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition.

Link to the post is here:

@MS hybrid boot

I have had ideas to speed up AOS4 bootup with a little bit similar feature. (before I heard about M$ version)
The environment does not change between bootups usually, therefore hybrid can be good.

I've also noticed that hybrid is now the windows standard way. Without hybrid shutdown all kinds of weird things can happen. To me it seems they test mainly hybrid shutdown and fast startup at M$ & third parties (so, the real real cold boot seems less robust).

Multiviewer seems like a very useful tool indeed. I'm quite impressed actually :) Too bad there is no MorphOS version but I would like to give the 68k version a try. If it's not crash prone it seems like a better program than what MorphOS can currently offer.

A-Eon, if you read this, I would really like a MorphOS version ;)

What will it cost?

Been a bit busy with work this month, but today I have two new blog posts.

One looks at using a Radeon 7750 card with the Warp3D Southern Island drivers on my Sam460CR under AmigaOS4.1 Final Edition:

I have written a new blog entry looking at the recently released games - Quake 2 high Definition Warp3D by HunoPPC, The Secret of Middle City (Demo) by GDG Entertainment and a quick look at the Warp3D version of Wings Battlefield. (All using AmigaOS4.1 Final Edition on my Sam460CR)

I will be on holiday for a bit from this week with no access to my Amiga systems so the blog will be paused until I return in August. In the meantime have a great time with your Amiga systems, Classic or Next Generation! :-)

Thank you, I had a great holiday in Japan. It was good to unplug - I really needed it.

I have been very busy back at work and also updating my interesting trains blog this week with my Japan trip train travels - please feel free to check it out if interested! http://interestingtrains.blogspot.com.au

When done with those blog entries (they take a lot of time) I will turn my attention back to the Amiga blog again. I am really looking forward to attending the Adelaide Amiga meeting next month!

Regarding my X1000, the CPU was confirmed damaged by Varisys just over a month ago. Most likely it was damaged by the unexpected power cut during the failed firmware update which I covered in my blog. It is an unlucky and sad situation for me.

My X1000 is now over 3 years old and is out of warranty unfortunately, and putting a replacement CPU in it is close to the cost of a new X1000, so I have been recommended to buy a new replacement X1000 instead, which gives me a new warranty again also.

I am working on this replacement with A-EON at the moment, and Trevor is being very helpful and generous to get this sorted out for me. I am very grateful for this, and I have paid for the replacement this week.

Hopefully I will get this system shipped to me in AU soon, and have my X1000 again to blog about the latest developments! Can't wait to get it! :-)

Epsilon

You should arrange to get an X5000 instead.  Being able to cover the new machine in your blog is good for A-EON too.

It sounds like it was the powercut, or when the power came back on, that killed the CPU.  That he was updated the firmware at the time is simply co-incidence.

The CPU is surface mouned but as JJ says it is the cost of sourcing a replacement that makes it uneconomical.

@Epsilon

Have you checked to see if you could claim against your home/contents insurance since the X1000 is a high value item.

Wasn't the X1000 insured? If so, you should get some money back and the insurence company will claim the electric company of the money lost. I think.

i've paid more than that for PCs in the immediate past, yes. some gaming rigs can cost a fortune. and at least two in the past decade died and required a $1,000+ replacement of components. so it can happen anywhere.

I do not need high-end gaming and for normal purposes any standard system is enough. I would have even problems to imagine a PC for that price. But if you say you have.

I'm so sorry to hear of the passing of your friend, Mark. His family must be beyond devastated. My sincere condolences go out to them. Such a sad loss at no age at all. It's awful :(.

Reminds a bit of Megatraveller 1 although that was a top down RPG with spacecraft sections too. Maybe playing this plus FTL (Faster Than Light) are the modern day equivalents?

Pretty sure you would need to compile and burn dedicated 3.1 kickstart for CDTV to get the extended ROMs to work.

CDTV needs a extended rom upgrade to get it work with kickstart 3.1. Nothing special with it.

I have MKL's ide and 4mb ram expansion for CDTV's diagnostic slot.

You problem must be with extended roms?? I have extact same version of those, CD-rom works just fine.

Hi,
Got some A1000 kickstart disks like 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, also Kick bench, Kick Work, and serveral others. Looking for someone who lives in Pennsylvania, have about 1000 Amiga Floppy disks to sell. What is on them, various old Amiga programs, Operating systems, etc. Only reason I say in Pennsylvania, is because cost of shipping them would be pricey. Would rather see someone come up and look and make offer.

That yellow screen is distinctively green. Also, you must warn people who are running these older A500 variants with the red LED to NOT run that Razor 1911 Voyage demo (unless they don't mind their red LED's turning green that is!)

@Epsilon:

Can you be more specific about the "seamless integration" of Linux applications into the Amiga environment on ALICE? There are two way to 'integrate' this:

1. A simple AmigaOS (CLI) program that can run Linux applications. The Linux application's window is then drawn by Linux. It pops up in Front of the emulator and is simply themed to have the window borders look like an Amiga window. If they're using this approach, you can not 'mix' AmigaOS and Linux windows - it's impossible to switch Firefox' window to the back of the window stack and have a Workbench drawer or YAM's window display on top of it, for example.

2. Having a X Window server running on AmigaOS, and make the Linux applications send their GUI data to the Amiga X Windows server. This way the Linux application's window is drawn by AmigaOS, so the window behaves like a any other window on AmigaOS. It can be mixed with other windows, minimized or (theoretically) even be displayed on its own screen.

So far I was assuming they were using the former approach, because it's a lot less work and because the preview video released in March was carefully constructed so that the deficiencies of that approach wouldn't show. You praising the "seamless integration" makes me wonder if they're actually using the latter approach.

Ouch, sorry to hear that :/ I do disable PMs and only accept emails whenever possible, because I prefer to have all my messages in one place (i.e. my mail program). Didn't know this forum software would let you actually write the entire message before telling you that you can't send it - that's kind of stupid.

Yeah, I've got one. It isn't the best fit in the world with a card in the bottom slot of the three (?) it covers. Also, if you have any of the slots spare the little cover pieces are an absolute nightmare to fit without them falling out. Once secure it's fine however. You should be able to machine your own version of the bracket.

i would like to mention, that there is my older starfighter port for amiga on aminet. its been a bit slow on my a4k-060/50+voodoo3, but almost playable. i think mostly due to fixed 600x800 resolution, which is too much for a framebuffer this size to be fed via zorro/mediator at 7mb/s for full framerate.

http://aminet.net/game/shoot/Starfighter-1.1-m68k.lha

it would be something for vampire owners to check out, if the game runs at full speed on their systems. it may demand agl.library (storm mesa installation) which, inexperienced as i was probably linked against. (i dont remember well) i could try to recompile that though, if there is any interest.

Hi All,

It's been a while since I updated this thread but I have certainly continued to update my blog in early 2017, despite my health issues and study committments affecting things from June to November.

I am back up and running again now though, and here is a sample of some of the recent blog entries I have written this month:

Acer 15khz compatible LCD screen (21 inch) available in 2017 - compatible with Amigas:

https://amigax1000.blogspot.com.au/2017/12/acer-lcd-screen-that-supports-amiga.html

Adelaide Retro Computing Group meeting Dec 2017 (last meeting with myself organising it - lots of Amigas):

What I was up to Amiga-wise during the blog break from June to November 2017:

I hope you enjoy it! The blog is back! :-)

Hey Epsilon!

Thanks for your blogpost(s), its always a intresting read!

Sounds like its been a rough couple of months, but its good to hear your personal health is improving.

With regards to Adelaide Retro Computing Group, is it their personal commitments that lead them to call it quits? I keep reading that people are working longer hours for less money, and that will force people to prioritize away socalled luxury hobbies...?
Anyhow, you always got the online community!

With regards to your AOS4.x part of the blog, its good to see some info in that regard, for people like me that are on the fence about the Tabor for example.

Great write up as always.  They have done an amazing job with 3.10.  For me having a fully featured IDE is such a step forward.

It's definitely a great feature.

What would be cool is if OS4EMU was brought up to date and a MOSEMU was created for OS4 so we could all run each others software easily. :)
