Well running SP2 is something I might recommend to people considering the security changes in it (IE6 is quite pleasant now :)

But running every Microsoft beta available is asking for trouble.. :)

I've been running Windows 2000 since beta 1.

But then I was on a specially created deployment program which brought about the first publically used Windows 2000 service in the UK, and the largest in the world (for about a week :)

If there's one thing you learn in coding and testing software, it's never mix and match your beta software. Seriously.

Just wonderin' don't we think this a bit how shall I say it....iffy

When amiga users moan that Piracy of amiga software is a sin yet putting urls of windows sp betas which are subject to an NDA is ok....hmmmm a ikle bit smellin' of hypocracy.

Eat me for breakfast. :)

I don't know if this is the same one, but Microsoft does offer SP2 for public preview - I'm running it at home. I don't have a URL handy, but I downloaded it directly from their site, without any special access.

Edit: Yeah, I looked at the URL - it's directly from Microsoft. Now, that WMP10 might be a bit more sketchy, I dunno, I know it's not part of SP2 right now.

Bother...

Hum,
i didn`t think of that....

Though, i know that M$ is going to make available the upgrade to pirated versions of XP ; (To cut down on the amount of spam and viruses spread by unprotected machines...)

And perhaps by downloading (and testing) this patch the world will just be that little bit safer.... ;)  (or not?)

[i`ll remove it if anyone wants me too]

The second WMP link gives me a 404 anyway.

And for confirmation, here's Microsoft's page with SP2.

This is incorrect, as far as I know... Yes, they did announce that pirated versions of XP wouldnt be hindered to install SP2, in order to increase safety... However, the day after they said that they would not offer it to pirated versions... They said that this would be a sign that they endorsed pirating, and this was all wrong, so they´re going "SP1" on the pirates...

@Boudicca

Aaah! but is it piracy to link to a no cost software patch that is freely available from the vendors own website ?

Now if it was a link to a dodgy copy of office XP, that would be piracy, but this is just a preview and not really in the same category IMHO. :-)

Hum,
i`ve just had to remove that `update` completely....(and i almost didn`t manage....)

That (build 2096) looks ok on paper, but my machine just crawled along and won`t boot or close down properly.
And the display scramb;les up every so often (directX 9.0c ?)...
(i had to use the Force to reboot...)

media player 10 seems ok though, (hasn`t crashed , and has added a few extras), looks like that`ll stay.

My `Wreckamendations` are don`t bother with this SP2 build...

Hm, that's weird, I'm running SP2, and I've not had any problems with it (well, I did have one minor problem where I had a custom bootscreen kernel set as the default and was getting weird ntfs.drv errors, but that was fixed as soon as I edited boot.ini, and was my fault since the install informed me that I had to boot with an unmodified kernel). I quite like the upgraded firewall, it now auto-blocks new software on the first net access, giving you a dialog allowing you to immediately unblock, or keep it blocked. I've not really noticed any stability or performance issues as compared to SP1, for me SP2 seems rock-solid so far.

And to think a year ago I said I'd not run XP... =P

If you're REALLY paranoid about security, just run Linux/Firefox like I do, and install the official Java2, which is loads better than the MS Virtual Machine.  Solid as a rock.  Don't be too quick to rat on Windows for Blue Screens.  My dad just downloaded the latest nVidia Detonator drivers, and it was crash city!  The older drivers are much better.  My ATI drivers are awesome.

Outlook Express hasn't given me any virus trouble, so long as you have ActiveX and VB scripting turned off in IE6.  I don't like that IE and OE have unified security, but I rarely use IE for browsing, anymore.  Just watch out for 3rd party virus scanners.  Some of them do some nasty hacks to get into your mailbox, and Norton destroyed my Inbox once (multiple accounts of this happening from different people).  I eventually disabled e-mail scanning, and all seems fine.

My only gripe is the machine boots up in 20 seconds flat, but takes 1-4 minutes to shut down.  Yay for NT!  :-)
