Win 2000 SP4 woes
« on: October 21, 2003, 02:19:53 PM »
I just tried to install SP4 on my laptop, and after waiting god knows how long for the download, it says it cannot copy file cliconfg.exe, and asks me to specify a different location - the trouble is, the file IS there!!! Anyway, I try specifying a different location, where a duplicate of the file seems to be, and this yields no joy. Have I just buggered my system?

Cheers

Delete or rename both of the files.  Then try running the SP4 update again.

I agree, with my XP install I just thought I'd set it to auto update whenever; bad choice, ever since an update about 10 months ago explorer.exe bombs out all the time. Once I can be bothered to do a fresh install I'll update to SP1 then just do the really critical updates.
Restraining orders are just another way of saying I love you!

I was told SP4 introduces USB 2.0 support to Windows 2000, which is the main reason I updated.

Hmmm, no problems here. I've installed W2K on 3 different machines and then updated eventually to SP4, and it was a breeze.

Celeron 300Mhz (god knows what mobo)
PIII 800Mhz (CUV4X-M)
PIII 1Ghz (CUV4X-E)

It could be that your W2K setup got corrupted in the past and now the SP4 update gets confused when it reaches some strange file. I'd backup everything and reinstall W2K from scratch and right away update to SP4, then restore my backed-up files.

I got there in the end - I was just worried, cos I went against my better judgement and didn't back up my data before installing, and thought I was going to lose all the work I'd done on a friends site that I hadn't uploaded yet, the digital camera photos I have no backup of etc etc...

I should know better! I was lucky this time tho'

Thanks to all of you for your advice  :-)

SP4 has caused my IE6 to bug out 100percent of the time, but since I don't use IE6 for anything whatsoever it was not a big loss to me, everything else is still peachy

WindowsUpdate causes some trouble for me from time to time, but nothing like this.  Just for the heck of it, run chkdsk, but do it from the command prompt.  The GUI version of chkdsk is completely braindead and will actually IGNORE critical errors if it doesn't have exclusive access to the drive (and it never does, because of how Win2K works).

SP2 gave me a lot of problems with my nForce2/Athlon, which were fixed with SP3.  I've been using SP4 with a P4 for a while, and haven't had too much trouble.  The only thing I know is that the newest nVidia Detonator drivers have BIG problems with causing a BSOD and other random resets.  I downgraded my nVidia drivers and so far all has been good.
