Has anyone done this? Is it fairly simple and straightforward for a normal user? Thanks in advance for any info.

A pair of friends did that mod and they have no problems. The problem is the low quality of modern PSUs

Funny you should ask; I got the notion to attempt repair of an A2000 that I only bought to scavenge the boards.  The PSU acts very odd and when working puts out 7 Volts on the 12 Volt line.  So I've bought a harness adapter with switch  and a 250W ATX PSU from Amigakit.  So I will have first hand knowledge shortly.
