Title: Best Wireless B\G PCMCIA network card for A1200
Post by: trip6 on January 12, 2009, 05:21:40 AM: What is the best Best Wireless 802.11B\G PCMCIA network card for A1200? That I can download drivers for on the internet and works good... Any help is greatly apprecaited...

I believe Amigakit (http://www.amigakit.com) sells wireless adapters that work on the 1200, along with software for nice GUI config. of WEP encryption and stuff like that, otherwise the prism2 (http://aminet.net/package/driver/net/prism2) drivers have been ported from linux, that link also claims to have a list of compatable cards, too.

I use an old 3com etherlink III PCMCIA adapter, with 3c589.device (http://aminet.net/package/driver/net/3c589) and MiamiTCP. Works like a charm! (I even host web pages from my IP address on my 1200!)

D-Link DWL-650
Linksys WPC11
Netgear MA401 (RA)
Proxim 8430
Proxim 8433-05
Proxim 8434-05

So I will start hunting for these I guess...

Post by: pVC on January 12, 2009, 06:57:47 PM: I've used successfully Lucent Tech's and Orinoco's Silver cards. Seem to be very reliable and fast. Silver cards have 64-bit WEP encryption, but Gold cards would have 128-bit, so it might be slightly better and I don't see why those wouldn't work on Amiga either. It's an another question does that improve security in practise though.

Prism2.device works with those and you can check it's documentation about other supported cards. There's big list of cards which should work in theory. Shouldn't cost too much to test either as you can find those kind of cards very cheaply on used stuff markets.

Actually, prism2.device doesn't use Linux code, but was written from scratch.

It's suppposed to be the most complete list of PCMCIA networking options, and is quite a helpful page.

I don't think it will work with my A1200, since it's 32bit pcmcia, and as far as I know A1200 only support 16bit pcmcia cards.
Anyone that can confirm this?

I picked up a Linksys WPC11 PCMCIA card for US$5.00 on the local Craigslist. Tested it with the software d/led from Aminet. It works like a charm. This card has 2 LEDs, 1 is a LINK LED & the other is a TX/RX LED. I'm of the opinion that more LEDs = better card (more impressive!) :crazy:

Amiga can use PC Card (16-bit) devices but not Cardbus (32-bit).

Reading the Prism2 manual I found this:
[/SIZE][/FONT] If a card's chipset is listed at the AVS site as Orinoco, Agere or Prism (except the SSF version) and its bus type is PCMCIA or PCI, it is likely to work. Note that a few otherwise-compatible PCMCIA cards are 3.3V-only and therefore incompatible with the A1200/A600. If the card is listed there but doesn't match these requirements, it will definitely not work.

Teorically that Netgear WG511 works on A1200, do I say well?
