Haiku Alpha 2
« on: May 13, 2010, 07:05:27 AM »
So am I the only one excited about this project? Am I the only one typing in these forums who is using this gem of an OS?!?!

I can not believe how well this works considering that its only on its second Alpha Release. Amazing!!!!

I picked up a DELL Optiplex SX260 for $100 in hopes that it would run AROS or Haiku.

Naturally, AROS threw a fit, and Haiku Alpha Release 1 didn't fully support the hardware, but now with release 2, everything seems to be working as perfectly as it should at this point!

I've even heard that you can install this on a system with only 48Mb of RAM, just like in the old BeOS days.

If you've not checked it out yet, I highly suggest you do. It may not be Amiga OS, but it is perhaps the best OS that ever graced the likes of X86 hardware.

(Warning: Your hardware may not be supported, I high suggest checking the hardware compatability list first.)

Nope.

It also plays quite nicely on 701 netbooks.

I wouldn't recommend trying it with less than 64Mb of ram unless you seriously enjoy the sound of your hard drive thrashing around like an epileptic. That goes for BeOS as well.

Yeah, I have Alpha 1 installed for a good while now... Though it doesn't get all that much use really - my limited free time for computering is spent on AmigaOS. Having said that, I'll download it and install it soon - I have it and Ubuntu (which is also needing to be updated) running on an old AMD XP2200+ machine quite well!

I check in on this once in awhile, just because I'm a nerd.

I think the idea behind beos/haiku is great and it really does multitask quite well and run fast. I guess what I never liked what the gui and the user interface, just seems really clunky and grotesquely ugly to me.

Haiku has a chance to update the gui but hasn't. It looks like windows 95 to me, maybe 98 but I guess that is the era that are recreating.

Hopefully in the future they will do something, add themes, panels, widgets something to make the gui more customizable and not so horribly ugly. I also can't stand the window decorators, but I guess this is all nonsense if your just interested in how fast and good it works, which I hear is quite well...

I like ZETA and Haiku, ZETA is more complete and BeOS compatible.
My machines:
PowerMac G4 MDD 1.5ghz 1.25GB 10.5.8 & MOS 2.7
Mac Mini C2D 10.6.8 2GHz 3GB 250GB HDD
MacBook Retina 16GB 256GB SSD 10.8
iPad 2
Underground Gamer invites (a classic game site) PM

Need a part for a PC or Mac? PM me, I\'ll let you know if I come across it.

OS X trumps Windows on every level.

MorphOS, OS4 and Classic Amiga systems are the only ones who are real \'Amigas\', not that joke AROS or Amiga Forever.

Zeta has been EOL for over 3 years now. It died after Palm pointed out that the code had been illegally obtained and that Yellowtab/Magnussoft had no legal right to distribute, much less opensource parts of the code.

Haiku is BeOS R5 binary compatible and a complete ground up opensource re-implementation of BeOS. As for Zeta's compatibility... Being based on the (leaked) BeOS R5.1d0 codebase, there were key differences in Zeta that broke or hobbled an awful lot of BeOS applications in much the same way as the jump from AOS1.3 to AOS2.x did.

@the_leander: No, I would never want to run this or BeOS with 64Mb of RAM or less, but it is nice to see an OS that will at least install on systems with low amounts of RAM. Not that everyone and their grandma doesn't have at least 1Gb now a days, but still. A good sign that things are progressing and becoming more and more like the BeOS original.

@Daedalus - I don't get much use out of it yet either except listening to MP3's and browsing the web without the risk of virus's or adware. Sadly a lot of my old favorites such as the Exult Ultima VII clone do not seem to want to run, but then again it's still Alpha, so I'm waiting patiently for the compatibility to be worked out.

@dreamcast270mhz - Aghh so you've overclocked your Dreamcast egh? I've got all the parts to do that my self, but have not gotten around to do the soldering job. Anyhow yes, Zeta is dead and was very Illegal. While very nice for what it was, it still broke a LOT of compatibility, but who knows, maybe future version of Haiku will resolve this and allow both BeOS and Zeta software to work in the future which would be good for me considering that they updated that Musick app that came with BeOS (the name eludes me right now) so that it no longer crashed when you tried to save your work.

@haywirepc - REALLY? You are stuck on the lack of eye candy?! You'd really hate my VERY BASIC Work Bench 3.0 setup then. :)

Glad to see that some of you got your eyes on this at least. I remember first reading about BeOS in an issue of CU Amiga or Amiga Format (I forget which), and I was blown away by what I was seeing and reading about. At the time I seriously thought of it as the future of Amiga.
Now if some day someone will come along and write a UAE compatibility layer for it sort of like what is being developed for AROS.

Why not port Hosted AROS to Haiku?  Then you can have your cake and eat it too.  Who needs the AnubisOS project?

I tried Alpha 1 on my PC. It was pretty damned quick, and no mistake.

CU Amiga July 1998, "Amiga drops the bombshell"

Fantastic issue. And I agree - at the time it looked like what AmigaOS would have been had someone sat down and decided to rework it in a more modern context. I was deeply saddened when Be.Inc died not 3 years after that magazine came out.

I once interviewed Bernd Korz of Yellowtab just prior to their going bust. He seemed like a highly enthusiastic bloke. It's a shame that he essentially lied through his back teeth with regard the legality of Zeta, as it really was starting to show real promise.

Apparently the BeOS devs were really passionate about making things right, because it was their efforts that helped make Haiku what it is today.

I don't know much about Bernd Korz, but it is a crying shame what Microsloth did to BeOS, and in my opinion, much more serious than anything Yellowtab could have done.

"Illegal" or not, I do praise Yellowtab for keeping the OS alive for a bit longer, and now that it's dead, I don't care, we got Haiku, we got "Legal" source!!!! :)
