Title: AROS Status Update
Post by: falemagn on February 13, 2003, 02:57:11 PM
Seeing the lack of info about the subject of this message, here I'm forwarding an email explaining some of the things that have been going on during the last months regarding the AROS development.

Hope this helps.

I'll let the web update to someone else, but we are still alive :) not much on the hardware support side because of the current lack of developer resources, but on the software side, as far as i remember from commitlogs, in the recent weeks :

* numerous fixes/changes/improvements to the build system

* improvements on the elf loader, adaptation to AROS of GNU binutils,  only some work left on GCC to have a complete SDK.

* as usual, various minor fixes/improvements to Zune (introducing  Balance and Colorfield gadgets)

* lwIP TCP/IP stack compiles on AROS (but doesn't work much yet,  and probably won't before a long time IMHO :)

* freetype1 (ttf) shared library in contrib

* amichess in contrib

* improvements of the documentation

* improvements of the picture datatype

* improvements of FreeBSD support

and many other things and various fixes, there are at least some commits every day. Committers in the recent months include falemagn, verhaegs, stegerg, iaint, dlc, sebauer, chodorowski, schulz (2 years old bug :), gierich, henrik, hkiel, bloodline, jogr0326, sasu, sheutlin, psmith, bergers, ggreco.

I guess the next big thing will be the SDK availability.

AROS Team

Great work so far...

I'm not too surprised that a PPC build is in the works ;-)

If I remeber correctly, one of the design goals was to have the OS run on current Amigas (AmigaOne SE and Pegasos are now available and both are PPC).

I am impresssed with MOS (The "Qbox" holds promise) and waiting impatiently (expectantly) for OS4, but at the end of the day I am an AROS fan:

The OS written by the community ... for the community...

Go Team....

Regards
Darren

Cool.
Someone should write up a news article about the recent development and future goals to submit.

It has always been a goal to get AROS working across many platforms, but due to the overcrowded nature of the PPC platform (already 2 AmigaOS projects!!!) and the fact that no AROS developer had any real PPC hardware (other than a few aged BlizzPPC cards), no real effort was made.

Michal Shultz (our native platform starter guy) has just got himself a real PPC computer (a PPC 604e PReP) and has started work getting AROS to boot on it.

I must say I'm excited, as it will be the third platform AROS runs on (x86 PC, and 68K Palm being the other two).

I felt this information was too good to keep just in the dev circle, so I'm leaking it...
 You never heard it from me ok?  :-D

I might just do that actually, but it would be nice to have an AROS category, MOS has one... winge winge :-D

In fact I think that I have an obligation to do so, as it is my official role to keep AROS in the public eye.
