Can I use old power supply ?

Dear Friends:

My amiga 1200 kaput and got rid of it, but I kept my working
power supply.(ntsc).
I noticed Mr. Pietro is selling new amigas 1200 (which I guess are PAL systems
and do not work on USA as well)
If I buy one of his amiga 1200, would it be possible to hook up
to my older (ntsc)power supply, and would amiga work in USA ?

yes it will work fine. all amiga power supplies for 500,600,1200 output +5,+12v,-12v on the dc side, so they are the same in that respect. only the input changes. If you plan to add accelerators and other expansions it would be a good idea to get the more powerful A500 psu.

yep whatever supply outputs +5 +12, -12 regardless of input voltage will work on a silly PAL unit.

But your old power supply will not make a shiny new PAL amiga 1200 magically an NTSC model... it is and forever will be PAL until there is a hardware change/modification to the chipset.

There is a modification but nowadays, you're better off using PAL mode on a 1084S.  More software runs in PAL mode than NTSC mode anyway.

most NTSC 1084s' can run in PAL in RGB mode anyway (slight adjustment to H-hold), so unless you are using composite video, you'll be fine.

That isn't true abt more pal software than NTSC software. Perhaps there are more pal diskbased games, but nowhere near the amount of sheer software in pal format. Not at all.

Most OS based software is agnostic regards NTSC/PAL....   well written OS based software should run in whatever screen mode has been set for either its own screen or window mode on workbench.

I believe there is much more PAL floppy games than NTSC, most of the large game publishing houses were European based.

Yeah and PAL looks better too!  You can always be sure of getting the same colours all the time. As opposed to NTSC a 1950's technology built on a 1940's technology.

Tons of downloadable WHDload stuff works better in PAL, since they were probably made in PAL countries anyway. I was forever having to boot my NTSC 1200 into PAL mode to get stuff to look right.

PAL games were mostly 320 x 256 x 50hrtz
NTSC were about 320 x 200 x 60hrtz

PAL can have a very slight flicker... but NTSC has a very horrible red with bleeding black edges called "ant crawling" on vertical red lines. Quite ugly even on the best of displays.

The 320 x 256 also gave more raster time for interrupts so some PAL games had the advantage of doing more things per screen refresh. Some games could not be reproduced well on NTSC because of this. This happened quite often with C64 games.

it might be a good idea to get newer, branded, PSU. because old capacitors can fail. and newer ATX PSUs have various protections, higher efficiency and probably 'better' voltages. I'd get one with large fan to keep it cool and quiet.
