Sir Peter Ustinov, gone.
« on: March 29, 2004, 10:26:49 PM »
Today, March 29th, Sir Peter Ustinov passed away.

One of my favorite actors of all time, Ustinov was best remembered by me for his roles as the unforgettable Emperor Nero in 1951's Quo Vadis, Jules in the excellent 1955 comedy We're No Angels and his later roles as Hercule Poirot in several of the Agatha Christie murder mysteries.

If you have never seen these movies, lower your head in shame, and go rent (or preferably purchase) them immediately.

Peter, we love you.  Thank you for the laughter, and the memories.  You will be sorely missed.

Wayne

No question about it, Peter Ustinov was one of "the greats" and among the last of truely talented performers.  Aside from his roles listed by Wayne above, I would like to add:

Old Man - Logan's Run
Friedrich, der Weise - Luther
Prince John / King Richard (voice of) - Robin Hood (Disney)
Blackbeard's Ghost - Blackbeard's Ghost
Kaptah - The Egyptian
Lentulus Batiatus - Sparticus

Of course his credits go far beyond my listing but his gift was such that he could play any role and perform it with genius.  Fare well Peter and I hope they do indeed put your final wish on your headstone "Keep off the grass."

Pure Genius.

There, there. I'm sure he's gone to a better place. :-)
