Well yeah to be technical it was his step son. Regardless Max obviously took it very hard, they must have been very close. IIRC I've seen Max refer to him as his son, which most good step parents do.

I must admit I've never seen it that way.  I know they were close, but I didn't realise it was a father-son thing.
