It's not a real virus. Quite common now days to get from porno sites.
I've fixed a few machines the last month from friends that had variations of this, all got it from porno sites and I installed ubuntu on a vm so they can browse safely on suspect sites after I removed the darn software causing this.

You got a few options, start the computer in safe mode an use a restore point dated before you got it.
If that don't work simply start in safe mode then run msconfig an remove it from startup then manually remove the exe file.

You can also start the computer in safe mode then crate a new user an delete the old after copying important files because this only affects one user account.

The 2 last ways works 100% of the time and the first works of restore points are not corrupted.

Edit: you can also create a new user account with admin rights an run any anti adware software to remove it, I can recommend the software ad-aware it's free and made by a Swedish company but is available in English of course.

It's still the F8 key, you must time where to press it right, else boot from your W8 DVD/USB-flash or whatever media you use and pick repair installation, I suspect that will clean the startup registry and you will loose no files.
I have not tried that myself but I do not see how it not would work if the repair install works as the w7 one.

I use Linux for day to day browsing and such. It's funny when you go to a site and it tries to force install something and linux just asks what the hell to do with a file it doesn't recognise lol.

I use torrent sites to try and track down old anime movies and episodes. It's amazing how much junk tries to get onto your computer. But windows been the cheap Whore that it is opens its legs and let's anything in.

Hmm, funny. I use Windows XP Pro without any anti-malware protection at all and I never have any problems at all. It's an old habit from when I still only had A Pentium 3, but I've found that I have no use for said software at all.

What the hell do people do with their machines :p

Just mash F8 as soon as you power on until you get the startup menu.
Once in safe mode, press window+R to get the 'run' prompt, and run mrt.

I've been using various versions of Windows for a decade and a half with no AV software, and never encounter this stuff.  I don't know if it's just because I don't trust anything that pops up, or if it's how my security settings are configured in my browser, but I seem to be teflon to this crap.

Yes it amazing how much junk that tries to attack your computer, and often they get right through with Windows :madashell:

Conspiracy theory time!

My theory is that the anti virus companies are the very people who create the viruses to create more demand for their products. AVG, McAfee, Norton, etc are the ones who are making the flippin' things!

That wouldn't be the first time I have heard that theory. it's best when you get some malware that pretends to be a bit of antivirus and tries to scare you into buying it to get rid of nonexistant viruses.

I don't do anything dodgy in windows these days. i tend to do everything through linux lol. But my wife has a nasty habit of downloading these stupid smily packs for stuff like yahoo, and every virus riddled, data mining, facebook game. I would say that once I week i have to recover the PC to some sort of normality due to the crap she installs. And I have no idea how the hell stuff is getting on considering I installed kaspersky.....

OMG KESA YOUR FLAMING RIGHT!!!!

I actually had one of those. It was pretending to be AVG but it was obvious it was fake. But it did do a good job of screwing up my harddrive. I had no choice but to reinstall Windows from scratch.

To be honest i was wondering why Apple has remained for the most part immune to viruses. Virus makers have in the past targeted MS because they are a greedy corporation and they have a mainstream dominance. But lately it has swinged the other way with Apple overtaking MS in it's greed and dominance. So why are people still targeting Windows? Especially with Bill Gate's philanthropy? I don't think it's entirely a design flaw...

Yes it strange i have tried 2 free anti virus programs, and they could not find any form for virus or spam or malware and they ran for 4 hours. But when i tried some of the programs that cost money, they found 35 virus/spam in a matter of seconds. strange i must say.

There are viruses for Mac OS but I have only ever ran into a handful. From my experience Apple tend to be on the ball more about these things than Microsoft. But I think thats down to the amount of butthurt from the communities that occures when a major infection happens.

To be fair I would hate to work in the department that has to deal with sorting out infections at Microsoft.

Yeah I noticed this too. AVG reported only two thirds the amount of attempted infections that Kaspersky did.

You get what you pay for with virus software.  I use Eset products (Smart Security 5, site license), rock solid stuff.  Never had luck with any of the free solutions.

It's easy to blame MS for this, but the truth is that any OS with the market share Windows has is simply the one malicious coders code for.

If an Amiga OS variant had 90% market share we'd be in the same situation with it.

I got more viruses on my A500 than all the PCs I've ever owned.
Swapping floppies with strangers is a pretty high risk activity.

Typically you put virus software on a Mac to make it feel more slow and clunky like a PC.

Those junk don't "try to attack your computer, and often get right through with Windows". Instead, they try to attack your Windows, and often they get right through with (the help of) you :)

This reasoning is based on the premise that hackers target for specific reasons or have morals.  Hackers harm individuals not corporations.  So why do we believe they target corps like Microsoft?  Could it be that we apply that reason to justify something most people believe is clever.  What's clever about viruses or malware.  What's clever about destroing a disabled persons PC because they couldn't tell the malware from a legitimate download. That's sad and disrespectful.  Not the job of someone clever.
Simply, hackers are bullies and if you are a bully and no one can catch you, you want to do the most damage possible.  Why would you choose an OS in use by 15% of the population.  You wouldn't. So you choose an OS that has the most users.

PS: Stay away from the porn sites.  That free offer to get you a larger penis, that's malware.

I've been paying 25e per year for F-Secure and been quite happy with it. Last time when I got a suspicious post I could see how fast it got recognized by that software - it took some 4 hours and it was added to the database. There are good scanners in the net if you get something suspicious. A couple of times I got an infection from some website - and they weren't porn sites. S#it happens sometimes - but never caused too much trouble.

Hackers harm individuals not corporations.

Corporations are targeted by professional hackers for monetary gain. Only amateur hackers target individuals (unless there's something of value to gain from those individuals).

Quote from: gertsy;716181
So why do we believe they target corps like Microsoft?

Monetary gain. Not all hackers break into systems for the fun of it.

Quote from: gertsy;716181
What's clever about viruses or malware.

It's clever in the way it works when it works very well.

Quote from: gertsy;716181
Simply, hackers are bullies

Not all of them are, some or criminals who want to make money.

PS: Stay away from the porn sites.

Why? Porn sites are plenty safe as long as you have certain plug-ins disabled. I use Opera, and have an 'Enable Plug-Ins' check box in my tool bar, and 99 percent of the time I have this unchecked.

When surfing porn, simply don't use the ads, and focus on the content.

I in in love with Ubunutu. It is MY favorite Linux ever. When I have enough money I am going to donate $500 toward Ubunutu in their main website.

I also want to donate to WineHQ. If Wine can manage to be 100% compatible as Windows XP when running all PC app/software I will migrate to Ubunutu over XP.
