Description: This cicada had just been caught by the cat! They're about 4cm-5cm long (including wings) and harmless - but they're VERY noisy, especially close up!

We have them here in the south of Portugal too, but I've never seen one with colors, they're all various shades of grey.
I love the noise they make actually, it's part of the season. Very nice creatures and pretty evolved.

Those things fill up the pine trees here in North Carolina and make TONS of noise in the summer. Not a big deal though, a few minutes of it and you don't even hear it any more. You find their shells on the bases of trees all over, I guess it's when they gid out of the ground and fix their wings.

Macro mode is good fun!

Didn't want to crop too closely as I wanted to retain the 4:3 aspect, but thanks for your comments!

Looks like we have another participant 8-)

Nice detail mate, although a little more cropping would have been the icing on the cake ;-)

Come on guys, macro photography is great fun and just about every digi-cam has a macro mode of sorts now, so start snapping :-)
