MacOS 8.1 on an Amiga 500
MacOS 8.1 on an Amiga 500
Previous Image | Next Image
Description: I didn't think this was possible, but it is. I've been running MacOS 7.5.5 on my Amiga 500 for a while now, but I read somewhere that OS 8 needed a minimum of 256 colours and an 040. (obviously, whoever said that was wrong)

OS 8 is a memory hog (compared to 7.5.5) and running it in 16 colour mode on an A500 with 6Mb is a bit painful (6Mb - largest memory block available). B&W mode is fast, but still not much RAM left. OS 7.5.5 uses less than one third the RAM and so is much more useful on my setup.

The trickiest part of this screenshot was not getting OS 8  running - it was having enough memory left for the Amiga screenshot program to actually take the screenshot.

Nice!  :)
I like seeing A500s used for unusual/pumped ideas like this!
Love that machine (my first Amiga, and still in my hands).

Yes, I can choose between 16 colours and 16 greyscale. I chose greyscale for the screenshot because it looks better (nice shading of buttons/gadgets).

Mac 16 colour is basically B&W GUI with occasional bright (ugly) colour highlites. Same with 16 colour Mac games. Most supposedly 16 colour Mac games I played only use 8 colours and lots of horrible pattern dithering.

Is there no way to get a colour GUI out of Shapeshifter on your A500?

You should be able to run MacOS 8.1 on your A500 a lot easier - with your super-rare Viper/Ematrix 530. Have you tried it?

Yes, I want to try it next days!  :-)

My A500 has a 33Mhz 68020/68882, 8Mb Fast RAM, 2Mb Chip, 3.0 ROMs and 40Gb 2.5" IDE HD (ECS graphics, original sound).

Obviously you can't run MacOS 8.1 on a stock A500. It's still all basically 1992 and earlier technology - except the HD (and I do have a 1992 HD that works). Around 95% of my Amiga was made in 1987 ;-).

*(95% by weight, not by volume) :-D

Is there a link to the specs of your A500? Or would you post them?

I just read this on Wikipedia:
Quote
Released January 19, 1998, Mac OS 8.1 was the last version to run on both 680x0- and PowerPC-based Macintoshes...Released October 17, 1998, Mac OS 8.5 was the first version of the Mac OS to run solely on Macs equipped with a PowerPC processor.

So it looks like it is impossible for any 68K Amiga to run anything beyond Mac OS 8.1. I have "hit the wall", so to speak. (..at least I managed to get to the wall :-D)

I think it's amazing that a 1987 Amiga can emulate a 1998 Mac. (and this Amiga cost $799 CDN when NEW) I have an accelerator and some newer software, but still - has there ever been any other computer in history that could not only run software 10 years newer but EMULATE a whole other computer system that is 10 years newer?

Unbelievable! 8-)

Very cool!

Have just installed MacOS 8 into Basilisk on the PC, will have a go getting it running on my A3K, but am very impressed you've got it running on your A500!

But if I remember correctly, yours is no ordinary A500!!!

I love watching the stuff you do with your A500!

Oh good, I thought I was starting to bore everybody to death with my A500 stuff :-).

I can just imagine people thinking, "What, another 16 colour A500 screenshot? Give me a break. Why don't you do something actually impressive, like run OSX on a C64??" ;-)
