Some great shots of the Blizzard 1220/4
« on: May 27, 2017, 01:53:53 AM »
This rather modest accelerator has been overlooked by many but it is great - cheap, highly compatible, has an RTC, gives a taste of faster CPU and can facilitate an FPU, and it keeps with the tradition of Amiga not needing much RAM - you learn to live within the 2MB CHIP / 4MB FAST memory.

This one I have soldered in a 40MHz crystal for the FPU, I have also replaced the 32.768KHz RTC oscillator and the VL2020 rechargeable battery. Finally added the Freescale MC68882 @ 40MHz, not before giving the board and all the contacts a good clean.

Runs very stable indeed. For HW Pr0n, please check out these clean, high resolution pictures.:

Nice.  What's the pin header on the end of the card for?

great pics thxfor sharing
indeed this is not the best 020 accel for the A1200, the best one is the TRA 1200,
020/28mhz + supports up to 8mb fast mem using standard simms

@ a1200

So Freescale is still/was recently manufacturing 68882s? That's good to know. Where'd you get the new chip?

@ kirk_m

It's for an additional 4MB expansion, although there might be PCMCIA conflict issues with it installed.

If you use Kickstart 3.0, then you do not have PCMCIA issue when using 8 MB of RAM.

There is a solution when using kicksstart 3.1, You only need the card.res downgraded by loading it with loadmodule.

There is a seller in France on eBay selling the Freescale 40MHz 68882 PLCC variant.

As beautiful as this card is, I need some more RAM to run some more AGA demos so have gone back the the 1230MKIV. So the 1220/4 is on eBay here.

That's the first accelerator I ever owned.   The fast ram alone gives such a speed boost.   and doubled 020 is nice little boost too

I am sorry guys I couldn't bring myself to do it. I love that little 4MB card. way I see it is demos either run really well on the Blizzard 1220/4 or they don't run at all. The Blizzard 1230 with 16+MB RAM gives you a taste of the 68060 demos but it merely teases you with low FPS renders. Alas I have put the Blizzard 1230MK IV up for sale and the 1220/4 is staying put. Link to listing for those interested.

I am all over the place. OK this time it IS for sale. I will go for another 030 or beyond accelerator just to have the extra RAM.

Listing for those who might be interested: Blizzard 1220.
