Title: Who uses Amiga Unix? … and why?
Post by: mackbw on May 04, 2015, 10:53:01 PM
In the past few months I've been spending a bit of time tinkering around with Amiga Unix. I've managed to get X to work on a Piccolo VGA card and compiled a few items (vim and a few other things).

I can say most of my successes with Amiga Unix can be attributed to Failure's  Amiga Unix (http://amix.failsure.net/tiki-index.php) web site. However, there were also a number of hard fought battles that I had to fight on my own.

I was wondering are there still others out there working with Amiga Unix? If so, are you just hobby tinkering, or is there was some more purposeful ends?

I guess I'm just looking to see if there is a base of users to ask questions of or to answer questions for, and share what we build.

Regards,

Mack

I remember seeing an Amiga 3000UX tower in my home town Amiga store and was really jealous and wanted it.  I'd love to run the code in an emulator or resurrect the A2000 that I have in my basement.

Keep plugging.  Maybe I'll join you!

I have a 3000/UX desktop but received it with no drives. So right now it has just Workbench 2.0 on it. We had it at VCFE X a few weekends ago and someone there saw it and wants to see Unix on it. I have the tape drive and tape. Hoping to eventually install Amiga Unix on that machine for our channel at thegurumeditation.org

Should be an interesting episode. As to using it, well, we will see once I get it installed.

I've got AMIX installed on my 3000, although I've done very little with it for years. Hope to get back to it eventually. Mine is the 16MHz model, so it's a bit slow. Fun and interesting to play around with, but not terribly useful. I learned a ton about Unix in general by reading the manuals.

I don't, mostly because Linux and NetBSD are way more modern and support much more Amiga hardware. And they are still updated too, of course. :)

I use my AMIX system mostly as a telnet/mud client these days, since it's actually a little snappier than my 060 machine doing the same stuff.  If I can get openssh going on it, I'd also like to use it for terminal access to my other servers also.

Hi!

I have installed AMIX on my A3000UX from the original tape with the A3070. It runs with the A2410 and A2065 and I have the A2232 also (but not installed). Unfortunately after installing and a little bit of configuration I do not use it very often at the moment.
It is a nice machine and there are a few users but I do not think it is used in productive environments at the moment. The last time I saw a system in professional use it was the system from Tahoe who did administration of UNIX-servers via ssh with it.

Surprise to see words 'Amix' and 'snappier' mentioned together, especially after having read amix.failsure.net stuff where the writer keeps telling you how slow it is in every respect

New subforum support.Amix (http://eab.abime.net/forumdisplay.php?f=125) was only yesterday created in the EAB Forums, and hopefully we'll see all kinds of tutorials and discussions regarding Amix there!

Heh.. perhaps I should have said "Snappier at streaming text than the AmigaOS Console in my 060 box".  :) Though, I haven't tried any of the console replacements yet...
