Aros Vision 2.9.3 with MESA and Zune
« on: May 04, 2015, 04:47:42 PM »
I have just uploaded 2.9.3.

Major changes are that MESA/Gallium  is activated by default and it uses Zune instead of MUI (MUI can be  activated if necessary). MESA/Gallum needs 256 MB RAM and works only  with more than 16bit colour depth and is still slow but it works. I hope  this will motivate 68k devs to help with it. Another change is that I  now use Zune as standard. That means that more and more Aros  applications will be integrated in future.

Changes:
all system files updated
Zune and MESA/Gallium activated
Netsurf updated (much faster)
Themes added
Development (GCC) updated
most files from contrib/ports (Aros) integrated
Zuneview added
OWB (old Aros port) works again
FlashMandelNG added
Free Pascal updated (to 3.1)
Amiblitz updated (newest snapshot)
WHDLoad updated

Download and download-condition from:

Here is screenshot with MESA and Stormmesa demos

Very cool though isn't Zune a step backwards, or am I wrong?

I would not see that this way. Even if Zune is not (yet) full compatible there are more and more Aros applications (like the Free Pascal/Lazarus project or a new OWB) who will very propably also run on 68k. And I had a lot of discussions "why" using Aros 68k at all if you have 3.X already. In this sense pushing the Aros part and supporting Aros specific features makes most sense to me. Most applications work already, except Simplemail configuration must be done changing to MUI. Sending and reciving emails works again with Zune.

I would even say Aros 68k is the perfect platform because it combines the 68k software base with the growing Aros software base (with  new applications).

im totally with olaf on this. aros should push for its own open source solution. os4 derived reimplementation of mui4 is not open. it is second choice in this respect.

I really like Aros Vision.

The thing is: Isnt 256MB as a requirement too much for a 68k Amiga? On UAE it sounds great, but on a real Amiga... :(

PS: 256MB RAM sounds bloated to me.

I will also develop a kind of "light" version (called "Aros Vision ECS") with different icon set, Wanderer as desktop (some people do whyever not like Magellan) and only a minimum preinstalled (I have not yet decided what to integrate). "RTG" is the main distribution mainly targetting emulation (to be realistic). I activated MESA to show the potential of Aros 68k for the community because in the past I had discussions why using Aros if you have already 3.X and I want to show that Aros is much more than 3.X already with huge future potential.

@gulliver
mesa 7 in software mode on real amiga is anyway only a proof of concept, nothing usable and as long as there is no 68k coder interested to help with particular issues, we cant do anything about it. perhaps you can convince someone to join. toni isnt interested to contribute much beyond kernel issues.

Ah, ok then. It is a kind of way to show Aros around and find more supporters/developers.

Sounds good that way :)

OS 3.5 was just a yucky patch. I haven't tried OS 3.9 (for long enough) to have an opinion.
This one is about modern apps and its really nice.

3.9 rocks.  But I might be slightly biased.  ;)

aros68k is in some (probably many) respects worse than 3.9 or maybe 3.5. as one of many factors speed and optimization comes to mind. also support for some essential third party hardware like mediator doesnt yet fit in, which reduces its usability on real hardware dramatically to what genuine extensions like zorro bus may to offer.

still it comes with many things as granted out of the box, that on 3.x were only available as patches and it widens the software choice for 68k by whats included in aros contribs and ports.

And I had a lot of discussions "why" using Aros 68k at all if you have 3.X already.

Mainly probably because MUI 3.9 or later insanely worst. New MUI is being chases whistle^bells and no more. The indicator is stack size on Classic 68k.

MUI 3.6 - 4000 bytes
MUI 3.8 - 8200 bytes
MUI 3.9 - 16000 bytes
MUI 4.0 - 32000 bytes usually lacks. it hangs all the time.

It's hoped that the Zune will not go on this way.. Backward compatibility with whistle^bells just don't need. It's important to keep the code quality.
