What can you do with a dead IBook?
« on: April 12, 2010, 08:44:30 PM »
Just curious. An IBook was abandoned at the office, I claimed it, and after a number of months managed to locate a PSU. Now the motherboard has gone into meltdown. Seems as if this is a common problem according to the number of complaints I read online.

Since I hate to throw anything away, I was wondering if it could be salvaged for something else.

Blasphemer! Apple products don't die, it's just an evil lie spread by filthy Mac haters!

Seriously though, is it a nvidia onboard graphics model? I heard tell that they had issues with cooling. It might be repairable.

No idea what's inside Karlos. I just know it ran before when there was still a slight charge in the battery. It's just a plain white IBook.

Wait, is it a G4 model?

Check this old article from El Reg...

If the above story is true, there are probably people qualified to repair it still kicking around.

Having read the link that Karlos supplied it sounds like the G4 models weren't the only ones that had serious design flaws.

Take it to a specialist repair bod and get them to have a look at it, I can't see that you'll really loose much/anything by trying.

Well.

I guess it's not quite dead. You hear the 'bong' sound, and the apple logo appears and you can hear the hard drive spinning. However, the screen goes blank until you apply pressure to the area to the left of the touchpad.

Gratz, your GPU is loose - something some models of the ibook are known to be prone to.

Take it to someone who repairs them, it shouldn't cost a huge amount to get it working properly again.

My G3 iBook died one part at a time. First the keyboard went, then the USB port, then the PSU connector and the battery can't hold a charge for longer than two seconds.

I'd bury it in the back garden, in the hope that it would grow a new line of mac products on some sort of Apple tree.

I went by a MAC store out by North Hollywood and was greeted by a slightly rude tranny who gave me a very expensive quote on fixing the IBook. So much for that route.

Why would you go to a make up store?

No wonder the quote was so high. Ice white foundation isn't cheap.

Operate on it yourself and see if pushing the GFX card bit 'repairs' it? There's a fair few guides how to crack open Apple stuff, for ex.:
