Google Public DNS Servers
« on: December 03, 2009, 09:17:55 PM »
Google just released access to some public DNS servers that they set up. I'm trying it out now and notice a significant improvement in web browsing performance over both my ISP and the free OpenDNS servers. Info on how to set it up can be found here

Agreed.  The speed difference is noticeable.

Sorry, but I'll stick with OpenDNS if it's all the same.

I stopped trusting Google a while back.

I'm giving it a little whirl too.

[Don't appear to get any 404 redirector errors either. Which VirginMedia introduced on their DNS servers and required filling in various forms to switch it all off.)

Seems they've revised their frontend too with focus on search box and mouse movement to fade in hyperlinks.

And Google isn't? You think perhaps they're doing this out of the goodness of their hearts?

Huh? But.. I thought.. Google are the good guys aren't they? They're just being generous and allowing us the privilege of using their service enhancements..

I love helping Google bots, sharing is caring and makes the Internet a better place. *hugs*

You must be misguided surely?

Lots of feedback on this on the Lifehacker site here. Most agree that it is faster and of course the privacy debate is up for discussion again... :)

Thanks for sharing.  Some of the comments seem quite interesting. Have to see how this service unfolds.

I have to agree, though.  Remember the days when megalocorporations were Evil(tm) and Untrustworthy(tm)?  What happened to that inherent skepticism?  (Wow, my first ever CH post!)

Also, I have done some quick benchmarking and have found no increase in performance, but then all of my DNS servers are internal "root" servers, anyway, so I am not beholden to any ISP's DNS infrastructure unless intercepted at layer three.  And when I'm oot-and-aboot I use my own DNS server which has been configured following the numerous DNS security discussions available around the Intarweb.

Oh, and I like how their Security Benefits page http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/security.html does not once mention your privacy in using the servers.  And it isn't specifically addressed in their privacy policy page, either.

Hmm, I wonder why. Well if in doubt I guess don't use the service after all it is just a choice. ;-)

Hmm, I wonder why.

Because it's a quick and easy way of making a bucket load of cash by doing pretty much no work and no investment on new hardware.

If you can't reduce your costs, you have to find new avenues for profit. From a purely business point of view its actually quite a good way of further milking the most out of your equipment. It also is about sending a message to US carriers who have been whining to get Google to pay twice for its bandwidth (about 8-10 months ago backbone providers were bitching very publicly at the amount of traffic that went to Google). Given the amount of dark fibre Google has bought up, I wouldn't be surprised if at some point they went into the ISP business. Either way, a lot of people in the tech industry have been put on notice by this move.

Even setting aside the very real privacy issues though, no one company should be allowed to dominate the internet like Microsoft has done with the desktop OS.

As I said initially: Mono-cultures are an inherently bad thing.
