AbiWord Anyone?

Has anyone heard of AbiWord before? It's an open source word processor, currently for Windows, MacOS (X only…DARN :-x ), and various brands of Linux/Unix. I'm no developer, so I can't port it to MacOS9 or AmigaOS or MorphOS.

That's why I'm asking you guys. :-)

If you want it ported, maybe you should try and learn to program. Make it happen.

yes, i have it on my linux red hat system. it can import Word (windows) files. I don't do much writing, but Open Office seems very complete.

i mean, i'm glad i have it! and it's free!

Abiword 1.0.4 on this vectorlinux slackware box

Also using the openoffice from time to time,

but prefer LyX or kLyX for my manuscripting.

I've been using AbiWord for a few years now.  The only thing I wish it did that it doesn't is print envelopes.  Other then that, if you happen to get a fairly stable release of AbiWord, your good to go.

Abiword's nice!

Can do most things and is quite fast, compared
to OpenOffice atleast, which is really powerfull
but slow.

Very difficult as there is no X Windows equivalent on AmigaOS. It will need a complete rewrite for the GUI. A Port from unix is too much work.

It would be quicker to write one from scratch!

I just downloaded version 1.05 for windows and it still does not support tables.  :-x    Also still has problems with some Word formated documents.  :-x

Until it supports tables, I can not use it (required for my job).  

I can't live without tables!

However, Open Office on a fast computer is quite good! ;-)

1. There is X-Win for the Amiga,A AmiWin,DaggeX and the one in
the alpha-tree off the Geekgadgets. None of them is really usable
on a 68k-CPU, and that is why none off them has been maintained
for the last years (+ other reasons).

2. There is even a linker-lib that emulates X11-functions in
standard Intuition-windows, but that is also dated and buggy.

3. AbiWord uses GTK, which itself is not platform-dependant,
"all" you would need to do is port the GDK and the clib which GTK
relies on. Still much work, but no comparison to the gigantic
task of porting OpenOffice. But AbuWord is also no match for OO.

What if someone were to write an application that would take source code for a certain platform and, well, roughly port it to a different platform? Would not such a beasty save an awful lot of work?

Of course we'd need at least four of them: Windows to Amiga; Mac to Amiga; Linux to Amiga; and Unix to Amiga. ;-)

(I'm thinking of AmigaOS and MorphOS as somewhat similar here)

But then we would have to live with all that
bloatware that's haunting the "mainstream"
plattforms  :-(

I don't see any point using an filled Amiga with
pc software, takes a tractor to pull that and the
Amiga is much more of a ligthweight sportscar
(or go kart  :-D)

My point is; I don't want Mozilla or OpenOffice
or .... I want software that can do what they do,
but faster and leaner  :-)

ho! I have an idea! you see I'm sitting right
now in front of my A1 running Linux, AND
i have OpenOffice, Abiword, Mozilla, Opera,
MOL,  . . . . . . . . .  and so on. There's no need
porting anything, it's here on my Amiga! ;-)

...and I'm dreaming about OS4 so I can get
rid of all this crap
