Title: Apollo 1230 Turbo Mk2 RAM upgrade
Post by: CaptainPlanet on March 14, 2022, 11:37:38 PM
I've got an A1200 with a Apollo 1230 Turbo Mk2 and 16mb, the card should go up to 32mb (64 if you add another slot). Back in the day when I bought it I'd imagine 32mb was a lot of money so opted for 16. I'm not sure how much of a difference it will make but with RAM being so cheap compared to the 90s I thought I may as well upgrade to 32mb. My question is; do I have to worry about compatibility? There are quite a few 32mb simms on ebay but want to make sure I get one that is going to be compatible. The only info I have is:

supports 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 MB SIMMs single or double sided
accepts FastPage and EDO RAM
SIMM sizes can be mixed

Can I just pick one off ebay or is there anything else I need to consider?
Thanks

You definitely want 5V simm. 72 pin.

The snag is anything you buy will be 20 years old plus. If you buy untested, might work, might not.

Your best bet is to eyeball the RAM chips and design of your known good simm, and try to get similar or same (last two digits are usually access speed in nanoseconds).

If you do fit another 72 pin header for a 2nd simm, you will very likely have problem fitting back into the trapdoor.
