Picked up some used PowerMacs
« on: August 30, 2009, 08:38:30 PM »
I picked up quite a few used Power Mac's (7100, 8100, 8500 w/Sonnet G4 card, PowerMac G3, G3 B&W Mac).  I gave all of them except the G3 B&W to a friend of mine.  The G3 B&W had 9.1 installed so I put 10.2 then updated to 10.2.8 and I'm impressed with this old computer.  I had 1 gig of memory and a 40gig IDE hd laying around so I installed it.    I'm impressed.  I'm going to pick up 10.4 and then see how it runs.  Supposedly 10.3 runs better than 10.2 so maybe 10.4 runs good also?  Anyway if it does I'll look around for a G4 tower assuming its night/day difference between that and my 300mhz G3.

I've got a G4 PowerMac 800Mhz, runs 10.4 great. I dual boot it with 10.5. 10.5 runs ok, it's a little slow some times though still usable. 10.4 better on it though, does most things I want it too. Even use it for transferring video off my parents camcorder to DVD!

I had a G4 450 and whilst 10.4 ran ok on it i found it sluggish so went back to 10.3.

I also agreee with the 800's and above run 10.4 great.

I read on the net that 10.3 was more stable/quicker than 10.2.  Should I just give 10.3 a shot instead?

@espenbo:

thats pretty cool!  your G4 is much more powerful than my G3 though.  I got my stuff for free so I'm not complaining.  :)

I'm a big fan of the G3 Clamshell iBooks. I've still got my first one, I've overclocked it from 300mhz to 400mhz, and I think I'll attempt to put 10.4 on it today with XPostFacto.

I've got a couple other Macs (G4 eMacs, and a 1.25ghz G4 MDD PowerMac,) they're nice and quick but not nearly as fun as the Clamshell.

I didn't get into OSX until well after 10.3 so have no experience of 10.2 but was told the same by a mac guru friend of mine. I know he runs 10.3 on his G3.

This is a decent upgrade for that old machine. It's a 500MHz G4 CPU upgrade. These work well in breathing some new life into that old machine. The biggest upgrade you can get it after that is the fastest ATI PCI video card you can find.

Aside from that, you can also look into these:

G4 Mac Mini (goes a lot further in making you like a Mac)
