Title: Raspberry Pi and AOS 4.1 Question
Post by: trekiej on May 18, 2021, 05:02:48 AM
If AOS 4.1 was ported to the Raspberry Pi what do you think would be a good price for a license?
This would help pay for the port.

I’d pay ~$100 for a copy. A RPi port should be a no-brainer. The hardware is effectively free and available everywhere. The potential market size is enormous. Even if they sell it for $10 they’d probably make more than they do from dedicated OS4 hardware.

I would pay 100 u.s. for a license if it meant having more hardware choice.
I think it would increase fan base many times over.

Would big-end and little-end be a tough obstacle?

Another question is, how much would it cost to port AOS4.1 to Raspberry Pi?

Given that most of the OS developers work out of a sense of passion rather than desire for a salary there's no way to know. The whole codebase is in C now, so in theory it's easily portable. The technical challenge is drivers for the Pi's onboard hardware (graphics, networking, USB, at a minimum). The bigger (and, in all likelihood, insurmountable) challenge is Hyperion giving it the go-ahead.
Would big-end and little-end be a tough obstacle?
I don't know enough about this issue to offer a viewpoint, so... maybe? The extent of the difficulty probably depends on whether or not there'd be a PPC compatibility layer.

Agreed. Even if 99% of hypothetical OS4 RPi installations were pirated it would probably still amount to greater revenue than what they're making currently.

I believe in times past some parts would be converted to the new cpu and the rest emulated.
As time went by more parts would be ported until all were ported.

Id pay £100, it be interesting to know the sales numbers for Amikit XE Pi edition. I think it the perfect machine to jump on, with AmigaOs low front print and large array of app that are designed for low end machines, Amikit XE is great on it and really gives you a idea of what Amiga system could be like on the machine.

If you look at Amiga Forever Essential Rom pack for Android Phones, it says the sales are in 10,000+, so lets not forget porting OS4 to the Pi also means it wouldn't take much to make a Android version (even if its a emulation version I think it be popular and plus its money!)

I am not for sure what else I can say about this.
Maybe a poll.

edit:
Here is one.
