A4000T Socketed CIAs | ||
Previous Image | Next Image | ||
Description: Back in 1997 or 1998 a stupid sack of pus connected an ungrounded Parnet cable between his A1200 and my A4000T. It blew one of my CIA chips. It was replaced on the surface but it was really messy. It worked but it was 'ugly.' Recently I decided to do something about it so I sent the mobo in to Amiga Center in France and that nice guy Jean-Jacques Boulet replaced both CIAs for socketed versions. It looks a lot better and I now have spares in case something nasty happens again. Well done JJ.

patrik Posts:1287 | June 13, 2006, 11:41:51 PM Yeah, it is easy to get groundloops with induced interference in your equipment - some of the power supplys back-current finds an easier path to ground through another machine over the shielding in the cable because of bad or missing ground in your machine. It is more important to think about this in analog audio/video equipment though as then you can get serious audible/visible interference . But for example it is good to avoid shielded network cabling. What is extremely important though when connecting serial or paralell cables between two computers is that the power-supplies of the computers share the same ground - even if there is no ground available in the used wall outlet, the grounds of the two shall be connected - say by connecting the two computers to the same extension-cord (grounded version). Else you can get a power-spike because of the difference in potential between the computers grounds when connecting the cables, which can fry chips. |
orange Posts:2794 | July 18, 2005, 07:43:49 AM I've heared that parnet and null modem cables should NOT be connecting shield because of loop? :-? |

mikeymike Posts:3413 | October 25, 2004, 10:27:40 PM Quote it was one of those situations where a chap demoted himself to the status of chief douche bag in a couple of milliseconds. Did you kick him square in the nuts, and did he cry like Nancy Kerrigan? |

x56h34 Posts:2921 | September 09, 2004, 06:11:40 PM Not bad. :-) The right CIA chip looks like it could be seated a bit better in its socket (push it down a bit). |
