A590 - Internal power connecter/cable
« on: March 30, 2011, 06:48:30 AM »
Just needing some photos of the power cable and connector so I can fabricate a new cable. (After killing an old 20MB XT HDD LOL).

I have a new PCB which is great but it's using a molex connector on the board not the other Commodore type connector.

I've checked the hardware database but this too is not using the molex connector.

So any photos or help making a cable would be great. If not might have to save up some cash and buy an ATX adapter from amigakit ;-)

Everything you need is in the photo on Amiga Hardware Database

As I mentioned in my post the hardware database is not the version/revision that I have.

The version that I have is using a molex connector on the board. The molex connector is soldered on the bottom right corner.

If you look at the picture you posted in the bottom right corner there is a space for the molex connector.  From memory it's labelled CN7A.

The top right corner is the other type of connector (no idea what to call it) which was on my previous PCB. It's labelled CN7.

So the picutres they have are no use to me, I did find a schematic / repair manual for the A590 so will try reading it. But from memory it was very cryptic.

Well, I'm with alexh on this one. All you need is on the photo.

Yellow = +12, black = GND = red (marked orange) = +5. Measure it just to be safe.

Which is how I changed the end connector over to a molex, even with the above it fried the old 20MB XT (no great loss there).

i'm not sure if I understand. you need power for HDD, not a590?

just use the multimeter to check the pinout. iirc, two in the middle are probably GND. so you're chances are 50% anyway..

perhaps those very old hdd use different pinout? (I know that is the case with 3" floppy drives, for eg.)
Better sorry than worry.

Yeah trying to power the HDD, but my old PCB had a different power connector, the new PCB has a standard molex connector and on the bottom of the PCB has two pins (2 and 3 from memory) soldered together with a wire.

Have tried what was suggested above but fried the 20MB XT drive. My new plan is that I've ordered an ATX kit and will bypass the internal power connector and use an ATX PSU.

Have some mods that I want to do that will require more power connectors anyway so have made the jump to ATX earlier than planned. Just have to wait on shipping now. :-/

Yeah, I know it's been a while..
But if someone (like me)  ever have to make a new internal power cable for that type of 590, the colours written on the silkscreen are not as you'd expect.
Yellow = 5V, Orange = 12V.
