Hello from sunny Scotland!

I'm an Electronic and Electrical Engineering student based in Glasgow and have just purchased my first Amiga, although I whiled away many hours on my friends system a number of years ago.

I bought an A600 (not a popular choice I know!) cheap on ebay and have been busy tracking down suitable peripherals. Hopefully some of you guys will be able to give me some advice when I start to upgrade it. Next purchase - Golden Axe!!!

What's wrong with an a600?  I know it's not "military spec" (inside joke for the rest of us), but it's a neat little computer, and probably one of the only they could have eventually fit in a laptop case.

Yes.... Amiga released a Games console based on the Amiga 1200 and A4000.......
By the way.....I dont think you need to purchase Golden Axe!  I believe its probably free for download at  backToTheRoots.org  where you can get tons of free commercial games for the Amiga. Also Outrun, SPace Harrier, Shinobi and other Sega games  (I think)

Ah the 600.... doesn't that have a PCMCIA slot for ethernet. I am jealous, my A1000 nor my A500 has PCMCIA slots. Welcome!

backtotheroots.org is still active (at least according to a "whois BackToTheRoots.org" on my 'nix box. Just doesn't seem to be loading a page when you hit the site. Odd.

And as for the A1000 and A500 having PCMCIA - that'd be difficult as both of them pre-date even the earliest PCMCIA standard!

Electrically, it's a simple enough connection so it's not beyond the realms of possibility to add it to an early Amiga given sufficient electronics and software skills, neither of which I've got at the required level!

Congrats on finding an Ami.

I would recomend a SCSIsquirrel. After I hooked up an old scanner and old CDROMdrive, I was able to do all sorts of cool stuff with my ImageFX. That's after getting a HD.

For the most basic of needs:

1. 2.5" -> 2.5" -> 3-5" IDE cable

2. 2.5" HD at about 4GB will do it

3. IDE CDRom (and possible second 3.5" IDE harddrive for backup or extra storage)

4. 1Mb extra Chipmem underneath

5. PCMCIA 16bit 10Mbit Ethernetcard


And if you want to take it to the next level:

6. Silversurfer Clockport Addaptor

7. I/O, Soundcard or USB on Clockport

8. Turboboard with Fastmem (hard to get hold of so any will do but Apollo630/Winner630 is the best)

9. IDE Splitter, IDE Controller or IDE 2 IDE & SCSI Controller (Dataflyer 1200 SCSI or DataFlyer SCSI+ 4000)

10. External SD/FF

11. Graffiti external "Graphiccard"

I'm a fanatic A600 user so I will only tell you what I did trying to upgrade my miggy.

- Kickstart 3.1 ROM (From eBay)
- 1MB Expansion Chip RAM (From eBay)
- 3.2GB HD (From local reseller)
- Slim IDE CD-ROM 44 pins (From eBay)
- IDE 2x44 pins Cable for HD and CD-ROM (From local reseller)
- 3Com PCMCIA Ethernet 10Mbit NIC
- Compact Flash to IDE 44 pin Adapter (From eBay)
- LAST BUT BEST...
  M-Tec T630, 68030@42Mhz, 68882@44Mhz FPU (Unfortunatelly only 4 MB soldered Fast RAM) (From www.animart.pl)
(NOT the best board but the Apollo/Winner are SO RARE!)

Ok, I admit it's not a state of the art Amiga but it's almost the most the A600 can carry in it.
I haven't got the accelerator yet but when it comes, I will try to put OS 3.9 which is the last OS Classic Amiga's can hold, or if I have a memory limitation I'll install OS 3.5 which is surely just fine for our mini-miggy!

After all, I believe that everyone here just love these machines and getting the most of them nowadays it's a lot of fun and creative!

Ok, I've done some initial research and the answer is ... I don't know!

I suspect your requirements could easily be met but you'll have to allow me a bit of time to clear a backlog of audio/video/computing projects I already have. As soon as time permits I will seriously look into this matter and keep you informed of any progress.

By the way thanks for "Back to the Roots." I have a feeling this will be a much used resource!
