2010, the Year We Make Contact...
« on: November 28, 2010, 01:24:19 AM »
We watched this tonight. It was the second Space Odyssey movie made in 1984.  It was very nostalgic looking at 1984 technology depicting technology of this current year.  Highlights include: an Apple IIc (before laptops) shown on the beach, Hal's clickety keyboard, Chandra re-activating Hal (...hello, doctor, name, continue, yesterday, tomorrow...).  I actually typed these words into SpeechToy to hear my Amiga say them.  :)  Pretty silly, huh?

EDIT:  Oh , I forgot, for years I had an Amiga sample of Hal, "I'm completely operational and all my circuits are functioning perfectly."

That movie just doesn't have the impact of the original 2001. But Keir Dullea reprising his role as astronaut Dr. David Bowman was cool. Remarkable that he was able to do that over 15 years later.
And of course Douglas Rain (who did the voice of HAL the computer) was as usual calmly sinister.

Don't blame me, blame the know-it-all aliens littering our solar system with old shipping boxes. ;-)

BTW, I ran windows on a 386 bridgeboard.... it wasn't pretty. ;-)
