2009 - Amiga 500 still being used in carwash
« on: May 29, 2009, 04:09:43 PM »
I just had a customer buy 2 Amiga 500 motherboards, for his car wash! An amiga 500 is still being used to control a car wash in 2009!
Someone has to state the obvious and that someone is me!

Incredible! Do you know exactly what its function is? Controlling the car wash mechanism?

That's amazing.

Last year I got a free "dead" A4000 from a guy running a bowling alley. It was used in the bowling alley for 15 years to run the displays - until the battery leaked and it stopped working. (I cleaned it up. It actually works, but has fast-RAM problems.)

He bought another one and I assume he's still using it for the bowling alley displays. I guess he just doesn't want to buy new computers and software and deal with setting it all up. He didn't seem to know much about computers. (or Amigas)

I don't know too many details. I did speak to their repair tech so I could try help verify compatability, but I didn't go too deep with questions as I tried to stay professional :-/ What I did determine is it actually does control the car wash itself to some extent and has a video monitor showing animation during the car wash process.

Here's the kicker, the control software is written in Amiga basic.

Wow, would love to know how this is all interfaced.  I guess custom programming was necessary because there simply was never any Deluxe 'Car Wash' written for Amiga.

Are you sure it's not in EA's back catalogue? :)

It seems we have an auto repair shop that still uses Commodore computers, in Annapolis, Maryland! He uses a C-64 for his American car parts inventory!! (this is mostly a "foreign" car shop). He used to sell Amiga A4000s out of the shop, so there are a couple of A4000 machines being used.
I am rarely by this area, but I will have to try to get some pics for you all.
A2000 GVP 40MHz \'030, 21Mb RAM SD/FF, 2 floppies, internal CD-ROM drive, micromys v3 w/laser mouse
A1000 Microbotics Starboard II w/2Mb 1080, & external floppy (AIRdrive)
C-128 w/1571, 1750, & Final Cartridge III+

a place near me uses a c128 hooked to an okidata printer to print off invoices.

Its a muffler repair shop.

The guy was playing jupiter lander on it when we came in...
I am a negative, rude, prick.
