Any interest in a new Text-Adventure/IF?
« on: December 11, 2012, 06:26:37 PM »
Having recently discovered old alpha code of a text adventure I started working on a few years ago I kind of wonder: Is there still any interest in new, commercial text adventures?

The interactive fiction in question is about someone revealing a path into a rather quirky fantasy world full of strange creatures (including but not limited to trolls, goblins, wizards and warriors).

The game would cost 1 euro as a download and  if the it can garner enough interest (let's say 30 people) I'll also do a CD version.

The platforms I would be targetting are: AmigaOS3.x, AmigaOS 4.x, AROS, MacOSX, Windows and Linux.

A demo will be posted later today and will require a valid Glulx interpreter (the main reason I can't do a MorphOS release)

Ok. I've decided to upload the demo as is (it doesn't contain any of the current progress I'm making and is exactly as it was a few years ago).

The game will also contain graphics as well as audio effects.

The picture of the cat in the first room is in there mainly for the purpose of testing it on different platforms. It will be replaced with my own art soon.

It would be nice if people could tell me whether the audio effects/graphics work on their systems. I'm currently constrained to a Windows machine as my AROS machine is currently offline and my new Amiga 1200 is still lacking an HDD.

Here's a link to several GLULXE versions, in case anyone is still lacking an interpreter.

If it's going to be available for OS3.x I will be happy to contribute.

Definitely.

AROS and OS3.x are two of my all-time favourites.
They are the very definition of elegance

That's not to say MorphOS and AmigaOS 4.x aren't great too.
I really enjoyed my time with MorphOS* on one of my former boss' Mac Minis and am probably going to buy myself an AmigaOS 4.1 machine in the nigh future (if only they were more affordable).

*Gonna buy that one, as soon as it has been successfully ported to PowerMac G5s.

What exactly constitutes a "CD version" of a text adventure? Does it come with a CD soundtrack or something?

Well. I'm just not sure I can fit all those files on a floppy.
I was going to include a lot of audio and graphics (the game will basically be in the vein of a Magnetic Scrolls game with an optional no-graphics/multimedia free mode).

I will buy it.
Do you care if any one sends some text or images?

Sure.
Go ahead.

I'm quite interested in seeing how it looks on different setups.

I have gotten back into drawing.
Maybe I could use this as a time to get a feel for the process.

Ah. Sorry.
Misunderstood you there.

I thought you were talking about posting images/text from that demo.

Anyways. I'm fine with the other one as well.

I downloaded the file including the 4 on Aminet.

You actually only needed to download one of those files (the one for your platform).

They are for different platforms.

I'm in the process of drawing up the world map now.
It's very much inspired by the British Isles.

Ever since I first read J R R Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, I've been wanting to create a massive graphical MUD with a plot very similar to Tolkien's masterpiece.

10 years later (that would make it just a few months ago, actually), I abandoned that plan and decided to sometime start working on a total conversion for Skyrim (vastly time scripted, so the world would resolve at it's own pace, rather than the player's).

At about that same time, I revisited my plans for A Room By the Fire (the text adventure this very thread is about) and realized that, rather than having two seperate universes, I should actually merge them and place the plot of each of these games one island and several hundred years away from each other.

Having pointed that out, A Room By the Fire will be set on the smaller island (henceforth referred to as continent) of "Halveron the Small". A place created by the dying gods soon after the events of the currently nameless Skyrim TC.
