If it's another "custom chip" I say "big yawn".  I cannot think of anything right off hand that would make me get excited over this "news".   No matter what it is.

@SlimJim

Ordering my G4 800Mhz AOne in a few days as well.

 - Will run AmigaOS 4 when/if released
 - Buying one does not fund MorphOS developement
 - Buying one does not put money in Genesi pockets

Paris, France – December 3, 2002. Biplane GBH and Phendic-France SARL, both soon to be acquired by Ginseng. of Borg, are pleased to announce the development and final certification of the April chip.

The April chipset is a quantum leap in computing technology and brings the following features to the Pegasus motherboard:

Nano-Technology.  The April chip acts as a barracks for an army of nanobots that will actively repair any damage to the motherboard or its components within minutes.

RAM doubling.  Due to its advanced memory compression algorithms, the April chip effectively doubles any RAM inserted into the Pegasus’ RAM slots.  You can now insert a cheap 512mb DIMM and get a full 1Gb of memory available running at twice the speed!

On-board Graphics.  This amazing chip also replaces your existing, expensive AGP graphics card with it’s own ground-breaking custom 4D Graphics engine.  Now you can run Quake II at a resolution of  5120x3840 in 256 bit colour at a whopping 1000 fps.  You don’t even need to connect your monitor to the motherboard as the display will be “beamed” directly to the nearest monitor/TV to the computer.

Plasmawire.  We are proud to announce that the April chip will also upgrade the existing Firewire slot to the new Plasmawire standard which can transfer data faster than ever before so that data reaches it’s source before it is even sent!  Yes, that’s right!  Using Time Distortion technology borrowed from the Time Lords of Galifrey, the April chip looks forward in time to see what data you intend to send, them moves backwards in time and sends it resulting in you transmitting the data before you even know you want to send it in the first place!!!  Amazing.

Wireless Networking.  You asked for it and now you have it!  Thanks to the April chip you can now control your electric toothbrush directly from MorfOS.  Our included software update automatically starts your toothbrush in the morning, causes it to jump from the bathroom cabinet, wander across the floor, hop into bed with you and brush your teeth wile you are asleep!!!  Contrary to certain rumours circulating that a bug in MorfOS causes the toothbrush to mistake another orifice for your mouth, this is simply not true.  The fact that Ralph’s hemorrhoids mysteriously vanished while he was betatesting the software and that half his teeth are now missing is just coincidence.

Regards,

Darrin

The April can do more than the Articia alone -- did you guys miss the AA part?  It is a lady's name! OK, seriously, we will clarify this in Aachen.

Doh.. I'm too stupid to realise you meant a female name and not the month!

AA...... Advanced Architecture.
April If I remember was the name of one of the chips that was going into C='s AAA chipset

The Boxer had AA emulation  so nothing new there it just never worked. :-D  :-D  :-D  :-D

Surely However, using the NorthBridge as AA emulator is adding a bottle neck to the system.

As much I dont like the MorphOZZZZZZZZZZ Pegasozzzzzzzz clan. AA Emulation in a chip would be nice.

Oh, right, so I would want to use a £300+ Pegasos for x86 instead of a £100 motherboard with USB2, Firewire, Serial ATA, 5 PCI slots, APG8x, etc, for what reason exactly?

Maybe it's a "chip on their shoulder" :-)

Well, you can use PC expansion cards in the AmigaOne due to its BIOS, the PCI and AGP cards everyone seems to want. OpenFirmware does the job well enough, but there's not as much variety out there as their x86-ROMed counterparts. That's the point of the x86 support in AmigaOne rather than them using OpenFirmware, which I think is a neat idea.

I'm not even sure where to buy OpenFirmware cards, but there's lots of places around here to buy the PC counterparts for use in an AmigaOne, and I bet they're cheaper than the OpenFirmware versions too. It seems the Amiga community wants the el-cheapo cards from their local PC superstore or Ebay or old parts from a PC they are updating, and OpenFirmware is a bit of a trip-up for these folks.

@amigabill
Huhuhuhh why is that so hard to get ? The OF used on the Pegasos
DOES support standard "x86-cards", and that not since yesterday !

Pegasos had this x86 emulation for cards way before AmigaOne had it.
You can use *BOTH* regular peecee cards *and* OpenFirmware cards in Pegasos.

You can register the trademark 'Microsoft Windows' just not 'Windows'.

In america, there is a company called 'Domino's Pizza'...that is perfectly legal, but they lost a suit to Domino's Sugar for calling themselves simply 'Domino's' one time too many times...(or routinely)...but they didn't change their name, they just remember to call themselves 'Domino's Pizza'.

anyway, they can call it the April chipset if they want, and if you develop chipsets, expect to use a different name, now if you are in the calendar business, don't get too upset, you'll be just fine.....

my personal take was this was a ploy to pretend they now have a 'custom' chipset, which BTW just shows how this company really knows their target audience, wherease Amiga, Inc. is still blind and clueless.

yes, its probably marketing silliness, but a lot of people (not all but enough) wanted a custom chipset, and the customer is always right.

Why can't people buy what they want?  Heck if someone just needs a custom chipset for nostalgia reasons, that is no different, than hmmm getting a truck even if you don't really use the bed....let people get what they want for chrissakes....

you know what, and I don't think they're completely wrong...look at the consoles...its neat having the custom chipset for programmers to tweak more and more out of, years after they are getting long in the tooth....a computer, like a console, but is a real computer....wow, we could call it something like 'home computer'....wonder if that would have a market....:))

oops almost ranting now...anyway, buh bye.
