Which OS to play Amiga games???
« on: November 25, 2005, 08:47:38 AM »
Hello there,

I'm new here as you can see  :-D

My second computer was an Amiga 500, and i always (and still) play whit it. But the disks getting worser and worser. Now i was looking for an harddisk to put all my games on. But no one has one. Emulating like UEA doesn't also work right. Cant read my disks.

Now i am looking for an alternative os that i can ran on either an i386 or PPC machine. I've read about AmigaOS 3.1 and 3.9 even 4.0 But where can i get those, and what kind of hardware do i need. I Also downloaded AROS (www.aros.org). Could that be an alternative??

What i want is to download games an convert/read my old disks, and copy them to a harddisk. Because harddisk is more secure and much... very much faster than disks.

Greetz Roman.

/edit Or can i play amiga 500/600 games whit an Amiga 4000. Those are cheap to bye here in Holland.

get a 1200/4000 amiga, with a harddisk, a 68030/040/060, some 16MB+ fastram, os3.9 and REGISTER WHDLoad. then you could play games off the HD. see also www.whdload.de for more info...  :-D

You basically have 4 options:

AmigaOS 1.x/2.x/3.x on a real Amiga
1.x may be better for older games. But if you plan on installing to hard disk with WHDLoad then go for 3.x as you will need this for large hard disk support and also for WHDLoad to work properly.

AmigaOS 1.x/2.x/3.x on UAE
Same as above for compatibility, but some games will not work properly and as you said your disks will not work.

AROS
This can run as a Native AmigaOS-like OS on x86 PCs. But it will not run any of your Amiga games. You would still have to run UAE within AROS.

AmigaOS 4.0 on AmigaOne
As with AROS, this is an AmigaOS-like OS but it runs on proprietary hardware (the AmigaOne). It will run some PPC software for Classic Amiga (I think) and also some 68k classic software through built in emulation, but for you games yet again you will need UAE to emulate an A500/600/1200.

So for your purposes, I think an A1200 with a big hard disk and OS3.1 / 3.9 would be the best option. That way you can install your original disks to hard drive and run them from Workbench.

Hope that helps.

yes you can... stay away from 1000/2000/500/600/3000 _ONLY_ because you want it for games and ONLY 1200/4000 models have the newer AGA chipset  :-D
that's why I recommended on my previous post a 1200 or 4000 machine.

if u can, grab a 4000, as it has zorroIII slots, and you can easily add a RTG graphics card. believe me, this will make the whole experience MORE pleasant... also you must grab a scandoubler to use a normal and humane VGA monitor...

Keropi is right, try to find an A1200 or A4000. AGA is your friend  :-)

If I was in your shoes I would get an A1200 with an 030 board, about 32mb of RAM and OS3.1 with WHDLoad. That is the most cost effective setup and gives you the ability to run the largest selection of games properly.

I second that X-ray, I have an A1200 with a Blizzard 1230 card, 32mb ram. Really great setup for Games using WHDload, does some other things too, and web browsing works... just need to be patient :-)

That said if you want more than games, an Amiga 4000 would be a better option, providing you don't mind spending the cash... the upgrades aren't cheap...

@Roman,  Your best option if you already have a PC that is at least a Pentium III/800mHz w/256mb RAM is to buy Colanto's Amiga Forever 2005 and a Catweasle Mk4 floppy controller.

It will emulate any kind of Amiga and run alomst anything except the programs that require additional hardware installed inside or attached to the real Amiga like the Video Toaster or something like that.  AF2005 has WinUAE included and a program that keeps it up to date automatically if you are connected to the Internet.  The Catweasle makes your PC floppy able to read and write Amiga formatted floppy disks, so you can transfer all your original Amiga games to the PC hard drive and stop worrying about losing them due to corrupted disks.

AF2005 has gotten so good it is easier to use and switch configurations to run more different kinds of Amiga software than a real Amiga. (But I will never sell all of my Amigas, just maybe reduce the number from 18 down to 6 or 8)

 :-)
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

@Roman,

Okay, here is the link to Amiga Forever, which you can order online the great program Amiga Forever 2005 in either an online download edition or the full edition that includes one CD-ROM and two DVD's of historical content like the original launch of the Amiga, interviews of Jay Miner, the father of the Amiga, etc.  Info regarding the Catweasel Mk4 that can be bought from many resellers like AmigaKit, Software Hut and probably many others.

I have this setup on my son's recently built PC and it works absolutely great.  I cannot say enough about it praises and I am very glad to know that when that last Real Classic Amiga finally dies (many years from now) due to a custom chip failure that cannot be replaced because they are finally all gone, the Amiga will live on very well in emulation for generations to come.

(P III/800mHz is what I would consider a minimum config, faster w/ more RAM is always better for emulation)
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

Hmmm € 99,- for the disk controler and than $39,- or $59,- for the software. Therefor i wil have a A4000 or 2 A1200.

Think i go for the A4000.
