I have a Nvidia 8800 GS card.
It only works in Vesa modes.
I have used it with XP, Vista, Linux, and Aros.
Is there a program that I could down load that could test this card?
XFX is not helping me since I do not have an original receipt.
They do not make Nvidia cards anymore.

How do I test it?
With windows the drivers install and when I reboot it goes back to vesa.

Oh sorry. A bit tired and didn't quite register the bit about it only working in VESA modes. Have you downloaded the drivers from Nvidia webpage. Windows generally just has a basic VESA driver and you need to get the driver from the GPU manufacturer.

Try removing all traces of existing drivers before re-installing.

You're trying it on multiple different machines? If it won't work correctly on any of them, sounds like the card is toast.

It's working in VESA mode which suggests the card is fine and the problem is software.

If the higher driver won't load and the card stays in VESA there is a good chance it's dead.
Vista should find and load a compatible driver automatically for this model unless it's defective or the motherboard could be. Did you check BIOS version? (just in case)
Also, make sure it is well seated in the PCI slot. A badly connected card can also cause drivers not loading problems.

Make sure you have the proper driver installed for the card, and your particular OS (win version, and 32 or 64 bit, respectively) from nVidia directly.
The fact it shows fine in VESA mode means it works and if not giving you options to tweak the resolutions upwards due to lack of proper drivers. I've never seen a "dead card" work fine in VESA mode and not when the proper drivers are installed. Grab the proper ones from nVidia directly, not from the card manufacturer - all cards should run just fine with the makers drivers and few, if any - resellers/rebadgers like XFX ever custom roll their own drivers.
Check out device manager in windows and see what it tells you.

Thanks, I am trying to find out what the original bios for the card is. I went to techPowerUp and got theirs. I am wondering if this card has some cold joints.
Maybe someone will come out with software to check all of the functions on a card.

A problem with the bios seems likely.
Re-flash it to see if this will help Windows recognize it.
Without a functional bios, vesa would be the default.

Nvidias 8800 series gfx cards are prone to major errors.
i had one myself. asus, though.
they have an improper designed mainboard. when the chips get hot they tend to desolder important connections...
if your card only works in vesa modes, you may be a lucky one that has a card that works.
mine started displaying graphical bugs. and just stop working.
i heated it in the oven to 200 degree centigrade. for 8 minutes and letting it cool down.
it worked two times. the third time the card was dead...

you should start thinking about replacing the card.

Just replying to previous post. I have flashed to what techPowerUp has on their site. I do not know what the original bios version was.

I thought you said this was an XFX card.
Don't they have bios' available?
